Appalachian State - Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Appalachian State men's track and field was in action Saturday, finishing up competition in day two of the Wake Forest Open.

Freshman Alex Taylor was the top individual performer for ASU Saturday. A day after placing third in the 800m run, Taylor followed up with a second-place finish in the 1500m run. The Charlotte native turned in a time of 3:52.48 to lead a crew of Mountaineers to strong finishes in the 1500m. Senior Josh Houser's time of 3:55.31 earned a fifth-place finish, and classmate Nick O'Keefe finished 14th with a 4:00.34 effort.

Freshmen Landon Powell and Justin Thomas followed up strong performances in yesterday's preliminary round with solid finishes in today's 100m final. Powell, who posted a 10.74 yesterday, came back Saturday with a 10.72 to earn an eighth place finish while Thomas' 10.83 was good for 12th overall. Powell and Thomas were also part of a group of Mountaineers to post strong efforts in the 200m dash led by sophomore Dennis Moore. Moore turned in a time of 21.98 to finish 18th, while senior John Svoboda placed 24th with a 22.06. Powell finished just behind in 27th with a 22.14, and Thomas carded a 31st place finish with a 22.27 effort.

Junior Mike Wilson earned a 14th place finish in the pole vault "A" divison with a mark of 14-5.25, while freshman Evan Sandling cleared 13-1.50 to earn a seventh-place finish in the pole vault "B" division.

Sophomore AJ Dohanic turned in a time of 15.31 in the 110m hurdles final to earn a 13th place finish for the Apps Saturday. Dohanic also added a 30th place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.62.

Juniors Tim Daly and Malcolm Styers took home second and third place finishes in the hammer throw for the Mountaineers Saturday. Daly led the charge with a 180-4 effort, and Styers followed closely with a toss of 174-10.

Junior Nick Zeller placed 16th in the long jump with a 21-9 effort, while freshman Andrew Hill (21-2.50, 19th overall) and junior Philip Bush (20-9.25, 24th) posted strong finishes as well.

Appalachian State men's track and field will return to competition next weekend, with some athletes in action at Raleigh Relays at N.C. State, and others at the USC Invitational in Columbia, S.C.

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - Appalachian State mens track and field returned to action at the Wake Forest Open Friday, kicking off the 2010 outdoor season following a three-week layoff after claiming their second consecutive SoCon Indoor championship.

Senior Phil Mitchell kicked off his final outdoor campaign with a second place finish in the 5000m run Friday. The Glastonbury, Conn native turned in a time of 14:48.12 to lead a strong Mountaineer contingency in the 5k. Sophomore Sean Soderman earned an 11th place finish with a personal-best time of 15:06.87, while freshman Will Raby and senior Alec Meyer claimed the 13th and 14th spots with times of 15:11.29 and 15:13.14, respectively.

Sophomore AJ Dohanic qualified for tomorrows 110 hurdles final with a time of 15.24. Dohanics time was the 14th fastest of 55 competitors on the day and just .15 off his personal best.

The freshman sprint tandem of Landon Powell and Justin Thomas qualified for tomorrows 100m dash finals. Powell turned in the days sixth fastest time with a 10.74 effort, while Thomas was just behind with a 10. 77, which ranked eighth. Senior John Svoboda turned in a time of 49.63 to earn a 25th place finish in the 400m dash for the Mountaineers Friday.

Sophomore Darius Purcell earned a third-place finish in the high jump Friday. The Fayetteville, N.C. native opened the outdoor season with a height of 6-5.50. Freshman Colin Reber finished 11th with a mark of 6-1.50.

Jerod Gardner and Malcolm Styers earned top-10 finishes for the Mountaineers in the shot put Friday. Gardner placed sixth with a 50-3.25 effort, while Styers finished eighth after a 49-5.50 throw.

Freshman Alex Taylor kicked off the outdoor season in style Friday, placing third in the 800m run with a time of 1:52.73. Seniors Nick OKeefe (1:55.22, 17th overall), Josh Houser (1:56.27, 26th) and Andrew Yarchin (1:56.54, 28th) also turned in strong performances for the Apps in the 800m.

In the 10,000m run, Brian Graves led the Mountaineer contingency with a 31:15.03 time to earn a ninth place finish. Freshman Mike Lilley finished 11th with a time of 31:24.79, and Burk Staub and Mike Walker finished 16th and 17th with times of 32:03.42 and 32:15.32, respectively.

The Mountaineers will return to action tomorrow in day two of the Wake Forest Open, GoASU.com will have a full recap upon completion of the meet.

UNC Greensboro - Wake Forest Open

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Shaina Sumney turned in one of the fastest time in school history in the 1,500 meters for UNC Greensboro on the final day of the Wake Forest Open on Saturday afternoon.

Sumney, competing in the 1,500 meters for the first time in her career, completed the event in a time of 4:49.21. That time was good enough for the fourth-best time in school history and was just five seconds off the school record set by Katie Hansen last weekend at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational.

On the men's side, Jermaine Coore finished in 20th place in the 1,500 meters by running a 4:02.66. That time set a new personal-best for him by over 10 seconds.

The Spartans will return to competition next weekend at the Raleigh Relays beginning on Friday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Katie Hansen broke the school record in the 3,000 meters and Mike Koech came within a split second of breaking the men's 3,000 meter record on Friday afternoon at the Wake Forest Open.

Hansen's time of 10:12.66 in the 3,000 meters was good enough for fifth place in the event. Her time broke the school record set in 2006 by Heidi Pinkerton by almost five seconds.

Koech also had a top-five finish as he came in fourth place after running the 3,000 meters in 8:31.27. His time was just .02 seconds behind the school record set by teammate Joey Thompson last season. Thompson finished fifth in the event on Friday with a time of 8:35.60.

TJ Wyatt also had a nice run for the men's team as he finished the 400 meters in a time of 50.83. That time broke his own personal-best by half a second and marked the second-fastest time in school history.

On the women's side, Michelle Chewens and Jade Farlow each set the fourth-fastest time in school history in their respective events. Chewens, competing in the 800 meters, finished the event in a time of 2:20.61. That time also set a new personal-best for her, in addition to being the fourth-fastest in school history.

Farlow, running in the 400 meters, ran a time of 1:05.31, which was fourth-best in school history.

The Spartans will wrap up competition at the Wake Forest Open on Saturday with the track events beginning at noon.

Davidson - Charlotte 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlie Schmitt and Ryan Hopkins both placed in the top-five of the 3000-meter run to lead the Davidson men's track and field team on the final day of the Charlotte 49er Classic at Irwin Belk Track & Field center.

The times rank among the fastest in Davidson history as Schmitt took third in eight minutes, 39.53 seconds, and Hopkins placed fourth in 8:42.94.

Bryce Jones placed seventh  for the Wildcats in the pole vault with a mark of 13-1 ½ (4.00m).

Top-10 finishes by Peter Bruton and Demetrios Pagonis led the 'Cats Friday.

Bruton finished the 1500-meter run in 3:56.81 to place eighth, while Pagonis placed ninth in the 5000-meter run in 14:58.42. Both times rank among the top-ten all-time at Davidson. Schmitt also was strong in the 1500m, taking 11th in 3:58.97 On Saturday, Bruton took 16th in the 800-meter run in 1:56.02

Mordecai Scott led the 'Cats in the sprints with a time of 11.24 in the 100-meter dash and 22.68 in the 200-meter dash.

Davidson returns to action Friday and Saturday when the team sends representatives to both the Raleigh Relays and the Winthrop Invitational.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The distance runners led the way for the Davidson Wildcats, as freshman Natalie Atabek, junior Heather Conarroe and junior Lauren Childs ran personal bests and finished in the top five in the 5,000 meters, Saturday at the Charlotte 49er Classic.

Atabek was Davidson's top finisher in the event, placing third with a personal-best time of 17:42.49. She was followed immediately by teammates Connaroe and Childs, who finished with under-18 times of 17:43.06 and 17:47.97, respectively.

"Natalie, Heather and Lauren ran unbelievable!" head coach Jen Straub said. "All three went under 18 minutes and in personal best times, so I'm extremely pleased with our performance!"

Davidson also had a pair of top-30 finishers in the 1500 meters in junior Sarah Cline (21st, 4:54.72) and sophomore Jane Gay (28th, 4:58.39).

Freshman Rosie Lewis finished 12th of 56 competitors in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.45. She also competed in the 200 meters, finishing 43rd with a time of 26.93. Classmates Shelby Waggenseller (59th, 13.68) and Jena Manilla (59th, 1:09.01)were the Wildcats' top finishers in the 100 meters and 400 meters, respectively.

Davidson will return to action next weekend, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C. for the Winthrop Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Wofford - Charlotte 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Wofford track and field teams opened the outdoor season by establishing eight school records in the 49ers Invitational, hosted by UNC Charlotte.

For the women, freshman Andrea Kelsey finished third in the 3000 meter run with a school-record time of 10:41.00 while also establishing a record in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:52.73.

Freshman Emily Gothberg put her name in the Terrier record books in the 400 meter dash, clocking in at a time of 1:02.58 and also set a school record in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.02.

Freshman Shelby Harris turned in the best time of her career in the 5000 meter run, setting a school record with a time of 18:38.44.

Three school records were broken on the men's side, as freshman Trey Parker claimed 15th in the 3000 meter run with a school record time of 9:03.31. Parker also ran a record-setting time of 4:08.09 in the 1500 meter run.

Senior Bryan Brooks notched the third record-setting performance for the men, finishing with a time of 15:45.45 in the 5000 meter run.

The teams will compete next at the Asics Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. on March 27.

Chattanooga - Emory Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's men's and women's Track and Field teams opened the outdoor season at the Emory Invitational Saturday.

Senior David Moore (Sarnia, Ontario) raced to a personal best in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.70. Freshman Lucas Cotter was just two seconds behind his teammate with a time of 1:57.69.

Junior Tara Gietema (Knoxville, Tenn.), who has battled injuries this year, shaved nearly three seconds off her PR in the women's 1500 meter seeded race with a time of 4:46.51. Freshman Heather Stuive (Beamsville, Ontario) placed third in the race with a time of 4:45.31.

In the women's 400 meter Dash, senior Anneli Uys (Somerville, Australia) placed third with a time of 1:00.34 while freshmen Amanda Sumner (Bristol, Conn.) and Mary Cumbee (Brentwood, Tenn.) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the women's 800 meter run. Sumner finished with a time of 2:20.78 followed by Cumbee's 2:21.21.

In the women's unseeded 1500 meter race freshman Morgan Buchanan (Johnson City, Tenn.) was third with a time of 5:01.95 and junior Monika Groppe (Germantown, Tenn.) was fifth with a time of 5:03.95.

Junior Haley Horsch (Memphis, Tenn.) qualified for the finals of the 200 meter dash with a prelim time of 26.58. She placed fifth in the finals with a time of 26.69.

Freshman Mark Cole (McKenzie, Tenn.) was fifth in the men's 1500 meter seeded race with a time of 4:03.18. Senior Blake Ketron (Kingsport, Tenn.) ran the men's 400 meter dash in a time of 50.85.

The Running Mocs will return to action next Saturday at the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.

Furman - Emory Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Furman outdoor track and field teams had four first place finishes Saturday in the final day of the Emory Invitational, as the Paladin women's team placed fifth overall with 59 points, and the men's team finished eighth with 37 points.

Furman's 4x400m relay team of Monique Ositelu, Starr Belmont, Mischa Holmes and Megan Slatter placed first with a time of 4:06.37, while Ositelu also recorded a first place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:16.98.  Chloe Kowalski won the 5000m in 18:05.02, and Lee Gilmer won the men's 1500m with a time of 3:54.50.  Gilmer also placed fourth in the 800m (1:55.68).

Holmes placed second in the 400m dash with a time of 59.66, and Brittany Johnson was fourth in the 5000m with a time of 18:10.72.  Jenna Callahan posted a time of 4:51.52 for a seventh place finish in the 1500m.  Haley Gray was eighth in the unseeded section of the even with a time of 5:06.45. 

Charlie McGoogan recorded a time of 15:28.11 for fourth place in the 5000m, and Wilkerson Given placed fourth in the unseeded section of the 1500m with a time of 4:15.53.

In the field events, Scott Des Marais was fourth in the men's discus competition with a throw of 126-6.

Stephanie Post placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 89.5 and tenth in the shot put with a mark of 22-5.25.

Furman will compete at the Alabama Relays next weekend in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

College of Charleston - CCU Shamrock Invitational

CONWAY, S.C. - Freshman Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) broke two school records as she led College of Charleston track & field at the Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina University.

The Southern Conference Track Athlete of the Week, McArthur earned a pair of runner-up finishes at a meet that included more than 1,200 student-athletes from 37 different institutions. She led the Cougars in the long jump with a distance of 18'5¼", passing the school record by a quarter-inch. Junior Saskia Kalmeijer (Brussels, Belgium/Pope) placed 18th with a personal record of 17'2" for the third-best performance in school history. Junior Brynne Johnson (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) also competed in the event, finishing 34th with a distance of 16'5¾".

McArthur also broke her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles twice this weekend. After finishing third out of 43 entries in the preliminaries with a time of 14.28 seconds, she placed second in the finals, behind South Carolina's Janica Austin, with a time of 14.20 seconds. Her time is more than a half-second faster than her time at the Palmetto Invitational on Mar. 12.

Junior Mary Zolga (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) led the Cougars in the 400-meter hurdles. The current school recordholder, Zolga ran a time of 1:06.10 for the second-best performance in school history. Kalmeijer also ran well in the hurdles, recording a personal-best time of 1:09.36 for the fifth-best performance in Cougar history.

McArthur represented Charleston in the 200-meter dash, placing 18th with a time of 25.51, the fourth-fastest time in school history. Junior Isabel Boersma (Franklin, Tenn./Ravenwood) crossed the finish line in 27:08 seconds, while Johnson followed with a time of 27.68 seconds. Zolga competed in the 400 meters, where she recorded a 17th-place time of 58.32 seconds.

In the middle distance events, sophomore Kristen Wolfe (Midlothia, Va./James River) ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:25.01 for fourth place. Wolfe owns the top five times in school history, with Saturday's performance coming in fourth on the list.

Five Cougars participate in the 3,000-meter run with sophomore Grace Loba (Orean, Va./Fauqier) leading  the pack. She crossed the finish line in 10:55.34. Senior Emily Nagle (Annapolis, Md./Richmond) and juniors Erin Stoddard (Mauldin, S.C./J.L. Mann) and Kristen Jenkins (Cheyenne, Wyo./Cheyenne Central) followed, respectively.

Select members of the CofC men's cross country team competed in various middle-distance and distance events as part of the NCAA five-race allowance in the spring. Sophomore Christian Bailey (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) broke the school record in the 3,000 meters, shaving more than nine seconds off the existing record with a new mark of 8:50.20 for third place. Sophomore Alex Hill (Columbia, S.C./Dreher) finished 17th with a time of 9:27.63 while newcomer Sam Metzger recorded a 19th-place time of 9:35.55.

Junior Trevor Sprague (Dunwoody, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) topped his own school record in the 5,000 meters. His time of 15:03.72 placed him fifth and is 29 seconds faster than his previous record. He led a pack of five Cougars that included senior David Thomas (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Academic Magnet) and freshmen Manning Miller (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) and Kelly Toomes (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Bishop England). Thomas placed 19th with a time of 15:41.56, the sixth-fastest time in school history. Miller's time of 15:51.87 makes him the fifth-fastest runner in CofC history.

Sophomore David Lamberson (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) represented Charleston in the 10,000 meters, alongside Eric Robertson (Dalzell, S.C./Thomas Sumter Academy). Lamberson finished third with the third-fastest time in school history, 32:58.30. Robertson recorded a time of 34: 12.14 to come in eighth.

The Cougars travel to Raleigh, N.C. next weekend to compete in the Raleigh Relays.

The Citadel - CCU Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Citadel track and field team recorded 15 top 10 finishes at the Shamrock Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Brendan Kight had two top 10 finishes when he placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:55.59 minutes and ninth in the 3,000-meter with a time of 9:03.74 minutes.

Quintin Turner threw for fourth place in the hammer, landing a mark of 152' 4" while David Miller broke Willie Davis' 1985 freshman record in the 400-meter. Miller ran a time of 48.05 seconds for fourth place. Then Natalie Wolin finished fourth running a season-best time of 40:19.67 minutes in the 10,000-meter.

James Harris tied his personal-best in the high jump when he jumped 6' 6.75" for fifth place. Freshman Micah Wessinger ran past the school record by four seconds in the 800-meter when she ran a personal-best time of 2:13.26 for fifth place.

Suzanne Gay ran the 10,000-meter for sixth place recording the fifth-best time in school history and a personal-best time of 42:09.20 minutes. Austin Waldrop finished seventh in the 10,000-meter with a time of 33:35.57 minutes while Benjamin Canipe recorded a time of 10:45.07 minutes in the 3,000-meter for seventh place.

Christopher Castagno broke the school record in the hammer for the second consecutive week. Castagno threw a personal-best of 166' 10" for eighth place. Sarah Strickland ran 18:43.92 minutes in the 5,000-meter for eighth place and the men's 4x400-meter team finished eighth. Christopher Graham, John Gatewood, Daniel Till and David Miller recorded a final time of 3:18.94 minutes.

Monique Edwards is quickly approaching her personal-best throw in the hammer. Edwards tallied a mark of 161' 3" for ninth place. The women's 4x800-meter relay team rounded out the top 10 for the Bulldogs. Micah Wessinger, Sarah Strickland, Erinn Carter and Katheryn Gatewood broke the school record with a time of 9:39.45 minutes for ninth place.

In other successful performances, William Norris threw 150' 3" while Emily Green had a mark 148' 2", both in the hammer. Matt Earls was not far behind Norris when he threw 149' 8" in the hammer. Edwards also had a mark of 161' 3" in the discus.

Till ran a time of 22.26 seconds in the 200-meter dash while Joey O'Rourke is eighth all-time for his mark of 13' 7.25" in the pole vault. In the 5,000-meter, three Bulldog freshmen had a successful race. Kyle Keene ran 15:33 minutes, Wells Johnson ran 15:37 minutes and Atom Young recorded a time of 15:41 minutes.

Western Carolina - CCU Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Western Carolina men and women's track and field team claimed a total of 34 top-10 marks and ten podium finishes in the two-day Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Catamounts claimed 22 top-10 finishes on day two to close out their first outdoor meet of the 2010 season.

The Cats competed with 37 teams from across the country that included Southern Conference foes, the College of Charleston, Georgia Southern and the Citadel. Minnesota, South Carolina and Syracuse were also participants in this weekend's meet.

WCU had 13 top-10 finishes in the sprints and distance events on Saturday. The Catamount   women's 'A' relay team (Shalyn McMichael, Felicia Paulding, Felisha Garren and Jane't Carothers) claimed top billing in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:43.16 minutes.

Drew Tucker claimed his first outdoor individual title of the year with a win in the 800-meter. The junior tallied the top-time of 153:24 in Saturday's run.

In the distance 1500-meter run, Stephen Hammond earned third with a run of 3:59.23, while teammate Garrett West placed fifth at 4:00.47. Morgan Turner was the top finisher for the women with a time of 4:50.43.

Sophomore Nicole Okolo garnered a third place marking after topping the women's 100-meter hurdles in 14.50.

Jane't Carothers claimed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.23, while Brandon Hairston was the men's leader at 48.27 for sixth place.

WCU fared well in the 4x100 relays as the women's 'A' team (Paulding, Carothers, Raven Parrish and Sherrelle Froneberger) earned fourth with a time of 46.44. The men's 'A' team (Christian Bethune, Willie Bowman, Dominique Young and Benny Davis) earned sixth at 41.32. Meanwhile, the men's 4x400 'A' team (Hairston, Young, Tucker, Davis) placed fourth with 3:13.01 minutes.

Young earned fifth (10.65 seconds) in the men's 100-meter dash, while Paulding collected ninth in the women's event (11.96) on Saturday.

Western Carolina had two podium placements in the field events. Sophomore Jamie Van Pelt earned second in the men's discus throw with a distance of 47.17 meters. Teammate Quincy Marshall (sixth) placed inside the top-10 with a throw of 45.81 meters. Senior Matt Evans notched a second-place marking of 2.10 meters in the men's high jump event.

Ryan Pless (15.30 meters, 5th) and Marshall (14.89, 9th) both earned top-10 markings in the men's shot put, while Deirdra Morrison (12.27 meters, 15th) was the top shot put finisher for the women.

In the triple jump, Tiana Jones (11.74 meters, 7th) and Tara Tounzen (37.07 meters, 9th) garnered top-10 accolades for the women. Cornelius Williams placed fifth with his longest jump of 14.66 meters.

Zakiyyah Stewart (40.48 meters, 7th in discus throw) and Michael Osteen (4.45 meters, 8th in pole vault) rounded out the top-10 finishers for the Catamounts in the Shamrock Invitational.

Western Carolina will host its first outdoor meet of the season next Saturday, March 27 at the Catamount Athletic Complex. Teams from across the region will be participating in the annual Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Western Carolina men and women's outdoor track and field team completed day one of the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University on Friday. WCU had 12 top-10 finishes in their first outdoor competition of the season.

The Catamounts claimed five of the 12 top-10 finishes in distance events on Friday.

Sophomore Josey Weaver claimed first in the men's 10,000 meter run by four seconds in Friday afternoon's final. The Weaverville, N.C. native ran the event in 31:40.88 minutes. On the women's side, Olivia Jacobs notched a second place finish with a time of 38:21.12 in the 10,000 meter run.

In the men's 5,000 meter run, Stephen Hammond placed fourth with 14:58.55 minutes and Nolan Clark notched an eighth-place mark with a run of 15:19.10. Jacobs also ran the 5,000 meter run in 18:12.27 for a fifth place finish.

The Catamount men took home the 4x200 meter relay title with a mark of 1:25.00. The 'B' team was comprised of Willie Boman, Jestin Jennings, Lawren Willard and Alex Dollard. The women's 4x200 meter relay 'B' team (Emma Bowers, Hannah Bowers, Shalyn McMichael, Valerie Parks) placed ninth with a run of 1:41.09.

The Western Carolina 'A' team (Jennings, Drew Tucker, Garrett West and Stephon Roach) finished tenth in the 4x800 relay in 8:07.18. On the women's side, Bowers, Jordan Gaddy, Danielle Shaurette and Morgan Turner placed seventh in the event with a mark of 9:20.72.

Western Carolina also finished strong in the field events as Matt Evans placed fourth in the javelin throw. Evans, a senior from Old Fort, N.C., threw the javelin for a distance of 63.51 meters. Darren Dotson finished sixth in the event with a throw of 61.77 meters.

Zakiyyah Stewart led WCU in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 48.15 meters for 10th place. Quincy Marshall placed 14th in the men's hammer at 48.25 meters. Ashley Wala (3.20 meters, 11th in the pole vault) and Jane't Carothers (1.55m, 15th in the high jump) were WCU's top finishers in their respective events.
