SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Over 1,400 student-athletes from 12 member institutions were named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2004-05 year. The 1,491 names is a conference record, surpassing the 1,479 from the 2003-04 academic year.
Southern Conference athletic directors established the honor roll prior to the 1988-89 athletic year as a way to recognize the league’s outstanding student-athletes. After 364 earned the honor the first year, the honor roll has increased in 12 of the 15 subsequent years. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
Forty-two percent of the honor roll achieved a 3.5 grade point average. Fifty-two student-athletes posted a 4.0 GPA.
