SPARTANBURG, S.C. -   The 2010 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship gets underway Friday, November 19 at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C.

The quarterfinals are set to begin at 10 a.m. Friday when UNCG, the No. 2 seed in the North Division, faces Furman, the No. 3 seed in the South Division, in the first match. The second match has the South Division No. 1 seed and defending SoCon Tournament Champion, College of Charleston, meeting North Division No. 4 seed, Samford.

The third match features North Division No. 1 seed, Elon, meeting the No. 4 seed from the South Division, Davidson. The final match of day is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. with the South Division No. 2 seed Georgia Southern taking on the host and No. 3 North Division seed, Appalachian State.

Two semifinal matches will be held on Saturday, November 20 at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. with the championship match slated for Sunday, November 21 at 2 p.m.

The last two tournament championship matches have been fought out between the College of Charleston and Furman. In last season's rematch, College of Charleston swept Furman 3-0 to claim the 2009 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This season, the two teams met on Oct. 2 in Greenville with the Paladins pulling out a 3-2 win. They met again in the season finale where the Cougars swept the Paladins in Charleston, S.C.

Defending tournament and regular season champion College of Charleston finished the season 27-5 overall with a 15-1 record in conference play.  The Cougars are seeking their sixth conference title in seven years.  College of Charleston will face Samford in a rematch of last year's semifinal match.  Samford finished the season 14-16 overall and 8-8 in conference and has qualified for the SoCon tournament all three years it have been in the league. In the only meeting between the two schools this season, the Cougars swept the Bulldogs.

Elon claimed its first ever North Division title after posting an 11-5 conference record. The Phoenix finished the season with 20-13 overall mark, and are looking to become the first of the current North Division teams to claim the conference title since Chattanooga did it back in 1998.

In Friday's quarterfinal matchup, the Phoenix will face Davidson, who defeated Elon in four sets earlier in the season. The Wildcats finished fourth in the South Division with a 16-17 overall record, 7-9 in the SoCon.

Opening tournament play this season are the UNCG Spartans and Furman Paladins.  UNCG finished the season 21-11 overall and 9-7 in the conference while the Paladins posted a 17-11 overall record and went 11-5 in the conference.  In a matchup between the two teams on November 6, Furman defeated UNCG 3-0 in the home finale at Alley Gymnasium.  The Paladins are looking to reclaim the conference title they won in 2008.

The Friday nightcap has the South Division No. 2 seed Georgia Southern take on tournament host Appalachian State. The Eagles finished 14-2 in the conference while the Mountaineers earned a 9-7 conference record. The two met just once this season in a match the Eagles won 3-1 in Boone.

The winners of Friday's matches will play in the semifinal rounds held Saturday.
