BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team fell, 5-2, at Gardner-Webb on Thursday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The loss drops the Terriers to 8-5 on the season and snaps their two match winning streak.
The Runnin Bulldogs took the first doubles match, when the team of Mary Walker Mixon and Miljana Ristic bested the Terriers team of Emily Erickson and Curran Carver, 6-3. Gardner-Webb clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win in the no. 2 position. Wofford did take the final doubles match, with Cassidy Hicks and Kalli Karas taking their match, 7-5.
Gardner-Webb capitalized on their momentum in singles action, as they took the first two singles matches to build a 3-0 lead. Catherine White defeated Taylor Carlson, 6-3, 6-4, in the no. 5 position, followed by Daniela Naupari’s 6-2, 6-3 win over Karas at no. 2
The Terriers answered with Curran Carver’s comeback win in the no. 6 slot. Carver dropped the first, 1-6, but won the second and third to put Wofford on the board. The team was able to cut their deficit to just one with Catherine Martin’s, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 victory in the no. 1 position
However, the Runnin Bulldogs responded by rallying to win the final two matches, both in three sets after Wofford took the first set. Gardner-Webb sealed the match with Ristic’s 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2 win in the no. 4 spot over Lauren Reid.
