Furman falls to Vermont in season opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. – David Williamson netted four goals but Furman could not overcome a five-goal second quarter, as Vermont downed the Paladins 12-6 in both teams’ season opener. The win moves Vermont to 1-0 on the season, while the loss drops the Paladins to 0-1.

Williamson tied for the game lead with four goals, while Carson Sorrells and Keegan Pearl each added one. Jonah Moore, Zach Scott and William Holcomb each tallied an assist on the night, while Alec Van de Bovenkamp made six saves.

Vermont was led by Ian MacKay with four goals, while Liam Limoges added three and Rob Hudson added two. Nick Washuta played 60:00 in goal and made six saves.

Williamson scored the first goal of the NCAA lacrosse season just 10 seconds into the game to give the Paladins the 1-0 lead, but Vermont responded with back-to-back goals to take a 3-1 lead with just over 2:00 remaining in the first. The Paladins got a goal from freshman Sorrells on an assist by Scott to cut the lead to 3-2 to end the first. The Catamounts extended their lead with five unanswered goals in the second quarter to take an 8-2 lead at halftime.

Williamson added to his goal total in the third quarter, scoring back-to-back goals to cut the lead in half at 8-4. The Catamounts opened the fourth quarter with a goal to push the lead to 9-4 before Pearl scored the first goal of his career to pull the Paladins to within four at 9-5. Vermont scored three straight goals to push the lead to 12-5 before Williamson picked up his fourth goal of the day with 17 seconds to go, making the final score 12-6.

Furman is back in action on Feb. 10, traveling to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to take on North Carolina.
