SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced the pairings and times for the 2018 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championship today (April 14). ETSU won the league’s regular season crown for the fourth consecutive year and earned the top seed in the eight-team tournament that will be held Friday, April 20 through Sunday, April 22 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The Bucs will open defense of their 2017 tournament championship with a quarterfinal match against No. 8 The Citadel Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. The other quarterfinal in the top half of the bracket features No. 4 UNCG taking on No. 5 Samford. The Spartans topped the Bulldogs, 6-1, earlier in the season and enter postseason play having won their last three conference matches.
Mercer earned the No. 2 seed and will take on No. 7 Chattanooga at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The winner of that match will advance to the semifinals to face either No. 3 Furman or No. 6 Wofford. The Paladins and Terriers will also square off at 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning. Mercer and The Citadel clinched their seeds for the tournament on Saturday (April 14) and therefore will not make up a match on Sunday (April 15) that was previously postponed due to inclement weather.
Saturday’s semifinal matchups will begin at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday’s title match is set for 1:00 p.m.
Furman leads all current Southern Conference programs with 14 tournament titles. Chattanooga has won the league’s tournament 12 times, while ETSU has won 10 championships including the last three. Samford captured the conference tournament in 2011 and 2013, while UNCG won in 2010.
