BRASELTON, Ga. – Mercer senior Payton Schanen qualified for the 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship by earning medalist honors with a 4-under-par 67 at the amateur qualifier at Chateau Elan Golf Club on Monday.
The qualifier was 18 holes of individual stroke play with seven qualifying spots and two alternate positions available. Schanen recorded six birdies during her round and finished three strokes ahead of second-place finisher Elizabeth Moon (Forrest City, Arkansas), who posted a 1-under-par 70.
It is the second straight year that Schanen, a native of Johns Creek, Georgia, will compete in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. She reached the 2017 tournament after finishing the qualifier event in a four-way tie for first place.
Schanen’s performance at the qualifying event is a continuation of her strong play dating back to Mercer’s 2017-18 season; the senior garnered all-conference honors for the second time in her career while finishing seventh in the Southern Conference in scoring average (74.89). Schanen placed third at the SoCon Championship in Hilton Head, S.C.
The 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship will be held at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tenn., on Aug. 6-12. Sectional qualifying for the championship event is currently underway at 23 sites from June 25 to July 18. Entries are open to any female amateur golfer whose Handicap Index does not exceed 5.4.
