GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's tennis team blanked South Carolina State, 7-0, Wednesday in the Paladins' season opener at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to claim the opening point. Freshman James Roelofse and sophomore Ivan Mitric topped Aleksa Daskalovic and Selim Ben Ali, 6-2, at flight two, and junior Clarke Wilson teamed with sophomore Drew Singerman for a 6-2 advantage over Omer Gorgun and Gerardo Bontifacio at flight three. At flight one, the Bulldogs' Juan Ramirez and Marcelo Rodriguez defeated junior Jake Bhangdia and senior Jake Munns, 6-4.
Furman swept the singles matches in straight sets. Mitric bested Daskalovic, 6-1, 6-2, at flight one, and Wilson held off Ramirez, 6-2, 6-1, at flight two. In the flight three contest, Munns posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Rodriguez, and at number four, Bhangdia beat Gorgun, 6-2, 6-4, at number four. Singerman defeated Ben Ali, 6-1, 6-1, at flight five, and Roelofse held off Bontifacio, 6-2, 6-3, at flight six.
Furman (1-0) will play host to Charlotte Friday at 3 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
