SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Aly Walker and Celie Hudson have been named the Southern Conference softball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for games played Feb. 7-10, the conference office announced Monday. This is the first weekly award for Walker and the second for Hudson, who earned pitcher of the week honors in week 10 of the 2018 season.
Walker started the 2019 campaign by going 9-of-17 from the plate as Chattanooga went 5-0 in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial in Kennesaw, Georgia. The junior got things started on Friday with two hits and a pair of RBIs in a 6-3 win over Ohio. She hit a double and scored two runs in the 6-2 win over Morehead State the next day before exploding in two wins on Sunday afternoon. Against Morehead State in the first game of the day, the native of Medina, Tennessee, went 3-of-4 from the plate with three doubles, three runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base in a 10-2 win that was called in the sixth inning. In the second game of the day, a 15-4 win over host school Kennesaw State that also ended in the sixth, Walker was 3-of-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. She also drew two walks in the win. On Sunday, she combined to go 6-of-7 from the plate with three doubles, six RBIs and three runs scored. On the weekend, she hit .529 with nine hits, scored a team-high seven runs, and added six RBIs, four doubles, three walks and a stolen base in a well-rounded performance. She had a .765 slugging percentage and a .600 on base percentage.
Hudson began the year with two wins, starting with a three-hit performance in a 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois on Feb. 9. In the win, the native of Paris, Tennessee, tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts. Later that day, she earned her second start in a 10-2 win over Morehead State. Hudson gave up just one hit and two earned runs in six innings, tallying seven strikeouts in the outing. Her no-hit bid was broken up in the fifth inning with a slow dribbler to third base. The junior pitched an inning in relief in the 15-4 victory against Kennesaw State on Feb 10.
