SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford senior guard Fletcher Magee has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests Feb. 5-11. The award is selected by the league office.
Magee averaged 31 points and shot 57.1 percent from the floor in leading the Terriers to wins against ETSU and Western Carolina. The Orlando, Florida, native also moved into second in NCAA Division I history in career 3-pointers and into the top 10 in career scoring in SoCon history.
On Thursday against ETSU, which entered the contest ranked No. 8 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, Magee scored a season-high 32 points, going 7-for-15 from 3-point range as the Terriers handed the Bucs just their second home loss of the season, 78-76 in overtime. Magee, who scored 11 of the Terriers’ 14 points in the extra period, moved into third in DI history in career 3s in the contest.
Two days later, Magee scored 30 points in an 83-56 win over Western Carolina, going 11-for-15 (.733) from the floor and shooting a blistering 8-for-11 (.727) from 3-point range, pushing his career total to 460 career 3s and passing former Duke star J.J. Redick for second all-time in Division I. The 30 points ran Magee’s career total to 2,306, seven points clear of Furman’s Jonathan Moore (1976-80) for 10th in league history and three points back of West Virginia legend Jerry West (1957-60) on the SoCon scoring list.
Wofford, off to its best start in school history at 21-4 on the season, puts its 13-0 league start, 12-game overall winning streak and 13-game home winning streak on the line when it hosts VMI (7-17, 1-11 SoCon) on Thursday. The Terriers then welcome UNCG (22-3, 11-1) on Saturday for a bout featuring the top two teams in the league standings and the Nos. 2 and 3 teams in the mid-major poll, respectively. Both contests will air live on ESPN+ at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s game is part of the league’s Nexstar broadcast package and will air on commercial stations in Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville, Charleston and Lynchburg.
Other nominees: Lew Stallworth (The Citadel), Matt Rafferty (Furman), Ethan Stair (Mercer), Isaiah Miller (UNCG), Josh Sharkey (Samford), Thomas Smallwood (Chattanooga) and Kameron Gibson (Western Carolina).
