SPARTANBURG, S.C. – High Point attack Asher Nolting and Mercer faceoff specialist Ashton Wood have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition April 2-8. The awards are selected by the league office.

High Point’s Nolting had a career day as the Panthers knocked Air Force from the ranks of SoCon unbeatens with a 13-9 win on Saturday. The sophomore attack set a program record with six assists and added three goals to match the program record with nine points. Both his assist and point totals tied for second in a game in SoCon history. Now with 36 this season, Nolting, the reigning SoCon Offensive Player of the Year, matched his own SoCon record for single-season assists and needs just two more goals to post just the second 30-30 season in league history. The Greenwood Village, Colorado, native became the first player to accomplish that feat last season, when he had 30 goals and 36 assists. Nolting needs just two points to match his SoCon-record point total from last season.

Mercer’s Wood set two SoCon single-game records in the Bears’ 15-14 setback at Furman on Saturday. The freshman from St. Augustine, Florida, scooped a league-record 19 ground balls on the day and went 29-for-33 in faceoff opportunities, with his 29 faceoff wins also good for a new SoCon benchmark. His 87.9 faceoff winning percentage was good for sixth-best in a game in SoCon history. Wood, who earned his second honor in three weeks, also contributed two assists on the offensive end of the field.

High Point (9-2, 3-1 SoCon), ranked 14th nationally in the latest USILA poll and 13th in the Inside Lacrosse and Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine polls, returns to action on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Eastern when it takes on Mercer (1-9, 1-3) in Macon, Georgia.

Other offensive nominees: Jack Flynn (Air Force), Ian Miller (Bellarmine), William Holcomb (Furman), Will McCarthy (Mercer) and Ryan Lanchbury (Richmond).

Other defensive nominees: Quentin Carlile (Air Force), Jordan Dondoyano (Bellarmine), Alec Van de Bovenkamp (Furman), Tim Troutner Jr. (High Point), Alex Giovinco (Jacksonville) and Sean Menges (Richmond).
