SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State's Mitch McLeod has been named the Southern Conference men's cross country runner of the week for his performance during the weekend of August 31-September 1, the league office announced Wednesday.

In his first collegiate race over 8000m, the freshman from Chapel Hill, N.C. finished third overall, (second collegian) at the Covered Bridge Open in Boone, NC. McLeod led the Mountaineers to a second-place finish behind tenth-ranked Florida State and ahead of UNC Chapel Hill, ETSU, and Northern Kentucky .

McLeod's time of 25:16 is the 7th best time ever recorded by an ASU harrier on their home course at the Don Kennedy Trails.

Appalachian State's Amanda Hamilton has been honored as the Southern Conference Women's Runner of the Week for her performance during the weekend of August 31-September 1, the league office announced.

The senior from Apex, N.C. finished third in the Covered Bridge Open, finishing the Don Kennedy Trails 5K course in 18:38, just shy of her course PR.

Hamilton led the Mountaineers to a second-place finish behind fourth-ranked Florida State.

The Mountaineers cross country team returns to action September 14-15 at the Mountaineer Open and Winthrop Invitational.

Western Carolina's Josey Weaver was named honorable mention men's runner of the week for his performance during the weekend of August 31-September 1, the league office announced Wednesday.

The senior from Weaverville, N.C. recorded an all-time PR of 15:21, finishing fourth at the 2012 Western Carolina Invitational. Weaver led WCU to a second-place finish in the eight-team field behind nationally ranked University of Florida.

Weaver is a graduate student seeking a MAED in Physical Education. He graduated from WCU in the spring with an undergraduate degree in Physical Education.
