College of Charleston tied for second at Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Led by John Duke Hudson and Zach Munroe, the College of Charleston men's golf team got off to a good start in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship on Friday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

The Cougars tied with Mississippi for the second-best round of the day with a 1-over 285 and are five shots back of leader Oklahoma (-4).

Hudson fired a bogey-free round of 68 (-3) as he got off to a strong start with two birdies and seven pars in his first nine holes. Munroe also shot a first-round 68 with four birdies for his round. Hudson and Munroe are tied for second place in the individual leaderboard.

 

Georgia Southern tied for fifth at Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Charlie Martin shot a 68 (3-under) and Scott Wolfes fired a 69 (2-under) to lead the Georgia Southern golf team in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship Friday at the Legends Course.

The Eagles are tied for fifth with Georgia State after shooting a first-round total of 289. Oklahoma leads the tournament, followed by Ole Miss and College of Charleston, who are tied for second. Vanderbilt is fourth.

Martin birdied five of the first nine holes to finish the front nine at minus-4. The sophomore birdied 14 and 16 but bogeyed 15 to finish the day 3-under.

Wolfes birdied the first hole but double-bogeyed the par-3 fifth hole.

The sophomore notched birdies on seven and eight to go in at 1-under par. He posted pars on the first four holes of the back nine before getting a birdie on 14. He birdied the par-3 16th hole to finish at 2-under.

Caleb Morris shot a 75 and Henry Rabbet posted a 77. Hayden Anderson finished the day with a 78, and Christian Humber, who is playing as an individual, shot a 72 and is tied for 30th.

Action at the Mason Rudolph Championship continues Saturday.

 

Davidson tied for eighth Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Sam Echikson fired a one-under 70 to lead the Davidson men’s golf team on day one of the 2012 Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt.

The 54-hole event is being played on the Par 71, 7,100-yard Legends Club South Course layout.

After a triple-bogey seven on his opening hole, Echikson played his remaining 17 holes in four-under and will enter the second round in a tie for 10th, just three shots off the pace.

As a team, the Wildcats are currently tied for eighth, just seven strokes out of second place following a season-low 292 (+8).

Freshman David Sargent recorded the lowest round of his brief collegiate career with a two-over 73. Todd Eckstein is a stroke behind Sargent, while Richard Fountain and John Skeades each carded 75s.

Virginia’s Denny McCarthy is the individual leader following a 67 (-4), while Oklahoma holds the top spot on the team leaderboard after recording a 280 (-4).

Round two of the three-day event will begin Saturday at 8 a.m.
