SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG senior forward Hakan Ilhan has been named the Southern Conference’s men’s soccer player of the week for all matches Sept. 24-30. The selection is made by the league office.

Ilhan had a banner week for the Spartans, helping UNCG to a 2-0 start in Southern Conference play. For the week, Ilhan had six points on four assists and a goal. He had a hand in all five of UNCG’s goals on the week as the Spartans downed Davidson and Appalachian State to move to the top of the SoCon standings in the early going.

Against Davidson on Sept. 25, Ilhan assisted on all four goals in UNCG’s 4-0 win over the Wildcats. The four assists, which all came in the first half, matched a school record that has stood since 1981.

The Stuttgart, Germany, native had UNCG’s lone goal in a 1-0 win over Appalachian State on Saturday, scoring what would prove to be the game-winner in the 39th minute. The victory avenged UNCG’s lone regular-season conference loss from last year’s SoCon regular-season title run.

Ilhan leads UNCG with six goals on the season and is second in the SoCon in scoring with 17 points. His four assists on the week vaulted him into a tie for the league lead in that category with five on the season. He is the league’s active career leader in assists (17) and is second in goals (28), putting him second among active players in total points with 73.

The weekly award is the second of Ilhan’s career, as he was also the league’s player of the week on Aug. 30, 2011. Ilhan becomes the second Spartan to be honored this season, joining Maximilian Schulz, who took the season’s first award on Aug. 28.

UNCG (4-4-2) steps back out of conference play to host Clemson on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Also nominated: Luke Huggett (College of Charleston), Chris Thomas (Elon) and Connor Davis (Wofford).
