Simmons posted a 0.45 goals against average and 18 saves to help the Spartans to a 1-0-1 week with a tie against Furman and a win over Wofford. She allowed just one goal in 200 minutes of action on the week.
Against Furman on Friday, Simmons matched an 11-year-old school record with 15 saves in the 1-1 draw with the Paladins, who boast the league’s most potent offense. The rookie from Houston, Texas, faced 26 Furman shots on the day, making six of her stops in the two overtime periods. Her biggest save of the day came in double overtime, when she stopped a penalty kick in the 102nd minute to preserve the tie and secure a crucial point for the Spartans in the league standings.
Simmons followed that effort with her third shutout of the season two days later, stonewalling Wofford, 1-0. She made three saves in that contest.
The weekly award is the second of Simmons’ career, as she was also the league’s player of the week on Aug. 21.
