Robb wins, Chattanooga finishes second at Bridgestone Golf Collegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chris Robb won his second collegiate event shooting 69 (-3) Sunday to capture the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. Robb beat Mississippi’s State’s Axel Boasson by one after trailing him by two entering the final day.
Robb’s 9-under par 207 effort led the Mocs to second place as a team. UTC (865) was a four-stroke runner-up to Boasson’s Bulldogs (861) while holding off Iowa State in third by a shot at 866.
Robb’s win was impressive. Including defeating his teammate, United States Amateur champion Steve Fox, the junior topped six total top-100 collegiate golfers with two in the top 20. Robb topped No. 16 Scott Fernandez of Iowa State by five and No. 19 Jonathan Grey of Georgia State by 14.
Fox joined him in the top 10, tying for 10th at 3-over par 219. The duo kept the Mocs within striking distance of Mississippi State, but the Bulldogs overcame the day-one leader with a solid 1-over 289 Sunday.
Liam Johnston matched Fox’s 73 (+1) in the final round. He ended up tied for 39th at 225 (+9) with teammate Michael Monroe. Benni Weilguni was third on the squad for the weekend at 222 (+6).
The Mocs are off until February. They next hit the links Feb. 22-24 at the Redstone Collegiate Championship in Humble, Texas.
UNCG finish 11th at Bridgestone Golf Collegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team concluded its eighth annual Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on Sunday as the Spartans posted an 11th-place finish at the Grandover Resort in the 54-hole stroke-play event. No. 47 Mississippi State won the event, recording a 3-under par 861 (286-286-289) to win by four strokes over Chattanooga, which was at 1-over par 865 (289-282-294).
Chattanooga’s Chris Robb won the individual title posting a 9-under score of 207 (72-66-69) after 54 holes to defeat Mississippi State’s Axel Boasson by one stroke at 8-under par 208 (69-67-72). Robb’s third-round score of 69 was the lowest of the afternoon while his second-round score of 66 was the lowest of the tournament.
Sophomore Alex Ehlert was the Spartans’ top finisher, as he posted a 5-over par 221 (73-69-79) to finish in a tie for 19th place. Sophomore Roy Dixon carded an 8-over 224 (78-69-77) to place 35th overall as the Spartans’ second finisher.
Freshman Luke Haithcock posted a score of 229 (77-73-79) to finish in 45th place, while classmate Taylor Coalson carded a 231 (73-79-79) to notch a 54th-place finish. Senior Robert Hoadley rounded out the lineup with a 232 (74-82-76), placing 55th overall.
College of Charleston third at Kiawah Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Alex Ellis shot a 1-under 70 to lead the College of Charleston men's golf team on day one of the Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point on Sunday.
As a team, the Cougars shot a 6-over 290 and trail tournament leader South Carolina (-2) by eight shots. Winthrop is second at 5-over, with the Cougars in third.
Ellis is tied for fourth place individually. Also in the top 10 is sophomore Zach Munroe, who is tied for eighth after he carded an even-par 71. Junior Parker Allen shot a 1-over 72 and is tied for 18th place.
The teams will be back on the course tomorrow morning with the first group teeing off from the first hole at 7:30 a.m. The Cougars will not tee off until 12:10 p.m.
