SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford outfielder Heath Quinn has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week and Western Carolina right-hander Jeremy Null has been named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week for all games Feb. 14-16. The selections are made by the league office.
Quinn, a freshman, got his career started off on the right foot by hitting .714 (10-for-14) in the Bulldogs’ three-game series against Valparaiso over the weekend. He also scored four runs and drove in six, with four doubles among his 10 hits.
The Birmingham, Ala., native had at least three hits in each contest. Quinn went 4-for-5 with a double and two driven in on Friday, then followed that up by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs on Saturday. He capped his weekend with a 3-for-4 effort that included a double, a walk and an RBI as Samford earned a walk-off win in the series finale Sunday. Quinn was also flawless in the outfield in three total chances, recording an assist in Friday’s contest.
Samford (1-2) returns to action Friday when it hosts Memphis for the first game of a three-game weekend series.
Other top hitters included: Dillon Dobson (Appalachian State), Bo Thompson (The Citadel), Casey Jones (Elon), Heath Burton (Furman), Aaron Mizell (Georgia Southern), Aaron Attaway (Western Carolina) and Seth Neely (Wofford).
Null lived up to his billing as the SoCon’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year, opening the Catamounts’ season by dominating No. 2 Mississippi State on the road. The junior from Claremont, N.C., struck out 12 Bulldog hitters in WCU’s 3-2 win, allowing just three hits and one walk – and no runs – in eight innings of work. Null struck out seven of the first 13 batters he faced Friday en route to posting double-digit strikeouts on Opening Day for the second straight season.
For his efforts against Mississippi State, Null was named one of Collegiate Baseball’s Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week.
Western Carolina (1-2) hosts Winthrop at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Other top pitchers included: James Reeves (The Citadel), Lucas Bakker (Elon), Sam Howard (Georgia Southern) and Andres Gracia (Samford).
