SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG sophomore James Dougherty has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played Feb. 17-23. Dougherty was 2-0 in singles play and went 2-0 in doubles competition as the Spartans earned sweeps over UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb.

Competing at the No. 2 singles position, Dougherty posted straight-set wins over UNCA’s Tom Panoulas-Orestis (6-3, 7-5) and Gardner-Webb’s Nikita Zverkov (6-4, 6-3).

Paired with Randy Phillips at No. 1 doubles, the Spartans’ top duo topped UNCA’s Brett Landau and Alex Crocker, 8-4. They then knocked off Gardner-Webb’s Zverkov and Ernest Alberch, 8-5.

Dougherty is now 4-2 in singles play this spring and owns a 5-1 mark at No. 1 doubles with Phillips.

The Spartans return to the court Wednesday when UNCG visits Campbell.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State’s Matt Saltsgaver, Davidson’s J.B. Gough, Samford’s Fares Kilani, Chattanooga’s Jorge Varon and Wofford’s Rob Galloway.
