SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford and Davidson will open the 2009 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament on Thursday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C. The Bulldogs earned the No. 8 seed, while the Wildcats are seeded ninth. The winner will advance to face top-seeded Furman Friday morning.

The four-day event will take place at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon and at the Burlington Tennis Center. The second match of the opening day is the seventh-seeded Appalachian State Mountaineers taking on The Citadel, which earned the No. 10 seed. Also squaring off at 1:00 p.m. is the No. 6 College of Charleston taking on the No. 11 seed Chattanooga Mocs.

UNC Greensboro, which earned the No. 4 seed, will take on No. 5 Georgia Southern Friday morning. At 1:00 p.m. Friday the host Phoenix will take on the winner of the ASU-Citadel matchup, while No. 3 Wofford takes on either College of Charleston or Chattanooga.

The Paladins claimed the top seed by virtue of a 10-0 conference record. The Paladins claimed the regular season and tournament championship in 2008, while Elon captured both titles in 2007.
