SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State and Chattanooga will square off in the opening match of the 2009 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament.  The No. 8 seed Mountaineers will face the No. 9 Lady Mocs Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Burlington Tennis Center.  The four-day championship will take place at both the Burlington Tennis Center and the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.

 

The winner of the ASU-UTC match will advance to face top seed Furman Friday morning.  The Paladins posted a 10-0 mark in league play during the regular season.

 

Also scheduled to compete Thursday is the Samford Bulldogs against the Wofford Terriers in the 7-10 matchup.  The winner will advance to Friday’s quarterfinal match against the No. 2 seed College of Charleston.  Thursday’s final opening round match pits the No. 6 host Elon Phoenix against the No. 11 Western Carolina Catamounts.

 

Georgia Southern, which earned the No. 4 seed will take on No. 5 Davidson Friday at 9:00 a.m. The No. 3  UNC Greensboro Spartans will take on the winner of the Elon-Western Carolina match Friday afternoon.

 

The Championship match is set for 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning at Elon’s Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

 

The Paladins have won 10 of the last 11 tournament championships, including each of the last five.
