Kentucky Leads the Hummingbird Intercollegiate; Western Carolina Tied for Third Entering Final Round
Sapphire, N.C. - The Kentucky Wildcats carded an opening team round of 279 to hold a three-stroke advantage over second place Furman after the opening round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. The Catamounts are amidst a three-way tie with Akron and Winthrop after Monday's first round after shooting 286 collectively.
Furman's Garland Ferrell posted two eagles on the back nine to shoot four-under, 67, on a beautiful fall afternoon Monday to take a one-stroke lead into Tuesday's second round. UK teammates Jordan Blann and Ben Fuqua - who recorded five-consecutive birdies on the back nine - are tied with Winthrop's Brandon Truesdale for second with opening round scores of three-under, 68, one stroke in arrears.
The final 18 holes will begin with fixed tee times beginning at 9:00 am on the front nine and 9:05 am on the back, with WCU scheduled to take the course as a team on the front at 10:48 am.
For the Catamounts, freshman Trey White and sophomore Kyle Wilson each posted a one-under, 70, on Monday to stand tied for eighth in the 102-golfer field. The tandem combined for 25 pars on the day to pace Western Carolina. Wilson made the turn at three-under, but a costly double-bogey on the par-4, 418-yard 10th dropped him back to one-under. The Mount Airy, N.C., native was able to drop back to two-under before a bogey on 17 forced him to settle for the one-under afternoon.
White had a rather uneventful 18 holes, steadily moving along the course. He countered two bogies with three birdies to shoot one-under.
Senior Ricky Stout was headed down the home stretch towards a solid top five finish after bouncing in a hole-in-one eagle on the par-3, 140-yard 11th-hole and posting birdie on the par-4, 287-yard 12th to move to four-under with six holes to play. However, five-consecutive bogies on the final five holes of his opening round relegated the New Bern, N.C., native to a tie for 25th at one-over, 72.
Rounding out Western Carolina's team scorers were seniors Tanner Briele and Drew Miller, each tied for 51st after shooting three-over, 74. Miller had a tumultuous opening 18 holes that included five bogies, three birdies and just one par, but settled down on the back to shoot one-over with two bogies against one birdie. For Briele, three above-par scores on his final six holes, including a double-bogey at 16, raised his score on the day.
Playing as an individual, freshman Jonathan Davies joined two Catamount teammates in the top 10 with a one-under, 70, to stand tied for eighth entering Tuesday's final round. Senior Benjy Davey shot 75 to stand tied for 61, with Rylan Lanham tied for 91st (78) and freshman Ronnie Garcia tied for 101st after shooting 81 in his first collegiate event.
