Joe Fornadel Named Academic All-District

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College football student-athlete Joe Fornadel has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team.

 

Fornadel, a senior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has played in 28 career games on the offensive line with one start at center this season. He was named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll twice and also has earned Southern Conference Fall All-Academic team honors twice. Fornadel is double major in biology and philosophy and is planning on attending law school next fall.

 

Wofford has had at least one football player named to the All-District team in nine consecutive years.

 

The ESPN The Magazine All-District team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Wofford is in the third district, which includes schools in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Nominees must have at least a 3.30 grade point average. As a member of the first team, Fornadel will be included on the ballot for Academic All-America honors which will be announced on November 23.

 

The Terriers will travel to The Citadel on Saturday for a 3:00 pm game that will be televised by SportSouth.

 

 

 

Elon’s Harris Garners Academic All-District Honors

ELON, N.C. -- Elon sophomore running back A.J. Harris was selected as a member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Football First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Harris becomes the first Phoenix football player to earn this distinction since Reggie Hall and Danny Boback each earned spots in 2006.  With his selection, Harris will appear on the national ballot for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors.
 
Harris, who has earned one Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week award this season, currently sports a 3.3 GPA in media arts and entertainment.
 
In eight games this season, Harris has rushed for 351 yards on 76 attempts and has found the end zone once on the ground.  He has also caught 21 passes for 236 yards and a score.  Harris, who also scored on a 35-yard return of a blocked punt, is second on the team in rushing and fourth on the squad in receiving yards.
 
Earlier this season, Harris rushed for a career-high 114 yards on a career-best 14 carries to lead the Phoenix to a 41-7 victory at Presbyterian.  In his last outing, Harris caught a personal-high six passes for a season-high 62 yards as sixth-ranked Elon defeated Wofford 34-6.
 
To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's contests, be at least a sophomore athletically and carry a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3.

 

 

Buncum, Keiper Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

 

Charleston, S.C. - Bulldog football players Jeremy Buncum and Ryan Keiper were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for the 2009-2010 football season on Thursday. Both players made the First Team University Division in District 3 and will automatically advance to the national ballot as an opportunity for further recognition.

 

Jeremy Buncum, a starting linebacker for the Bulldogs sports a 3.71 GPA overall. He is a political science major from Charleston, S.C. The junior attended Stratford High School. Buncum has started all eight games this season and is second on the team in total tackles with 42. He has an interception, two tackles for a loss totaling eight yeards, a seven-yard sack, a pass breakup and two pass deflections so far this year.

 

Ryan Keiper, a fullback and special teams player for The Citadel is a senior from Allentown, Pa. with a 3.98 overall GPA. The Civil Engineering major had a perfect 4.0 GPA his freshman and junior years. Keiper has one rush and one solo tackle this season and has seen action in all eight games.

 

The Citadel returns to action this Saturday as they host Wofford at 3 p.m. on Homecoming at Johnson Hagood Stadium
