No. 1S Davidson vs. No. 2N Elon
March 4, 2012
Head Coach Bob McKillop
On halftime speech
"We talked a lot about defense at halftime. We were giving their shooters too much space so we wanted to take away that space...I thought we did a great job of getting in their space."
On Jake Cohen
"We were going to go to our hot hand and work inside-out...Jake's obviously the guy to go to...I thought Jake was superb."
On going to the championship game
"It's a thrill to keep doing what we're doing...These guys keep getting better and enjoying this experience also. They aren't feeling the pressure that the head coach might be feeling. "
On coaching against a former player (Matt Matheny)
"You try to divorce yourself from that and it's not easy because I'm a human...Matt is like my younger brother and I have the greatest respect for him."
Junior Jake Cohen
"Once you get some stops on defense that leads to our easy offense because we are tough in transition...what we have to do is get stops first...We came out after halftime and refocused and we came out and executed really well"
"When one guy is having an off night or in foul trouble, you know that there is someone there to back you up."
"We have a lot of depth...I came out tonight and wanted to be aggressive...sometimes I can be too aggressive."
Head Coach Matt Matheny
Statement on the game ... "Our players had a vivid memory of when we played at Davidson two weeks ago. Davidson controlled that game. They had twenty offensive rebounds in that game and they were quicker to loose balls. Our players understand that there is a reason for that and it's because they do it all the time. It's something that we aspire to do. I thought for the first 25 minutes we really battled. We hung in, didn't play great in the first half but hung in. We came out in the beginning of the second half, which has been a problem for us this year, and played really well in what we call 'Round Six'. Davidson knocked us on our heels in the second half and got away from us. We did battle down the stretch. We stayed in it for the rest of the game but we played a very good team tonight. A team that deserves the seed they got, earned the seed they got and a team that has had a great season."
On the problems De'Mon Brooks and Jake Cohen present... "One of the major problems is that there are two of them that can hurt you. They have very good hands. They have an ability to score not only in the paint, but on the perimeter. Although we fought in the first half, they made threes. Brooks hit a three and if I'm not mistaken Cohen hit a three in the first half. Those are like daggers when big guys hit threes and both of those guys can."
On getting Brooks in foul trouble in the second half... "It was an incredible opportunity for us. He is the conference player of the year and we got him in foul trouble. We played pretty well for the first four or five minutes. It's going to be difficult for us to go back and watch the film during that stretch and see where it got away from is."
