SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for games played Saturday, Oct. 27. Appalachian State's Steven Miller has been named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Furman's Marcus McMorris was named the Defensive Player of the Week.  Chattanooga's Jacob Huesman was selected as the Freshman of the Week, while Wofford's Kasey Redfern was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Steven Miller, Appalachian State, Sr., RB, Piscataway, N.J.
Senior Steven Miller rushed for a career-high 245 yards and one touchdown on 34 carries as Appalachian State beat Western Carolina 38-27 Saturday afternoon.  Miller's 245 yards was the second-highest rushing output in the SoCon this season and the seventh-highest single-game total in the FCS this year.  Miller's four-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave the Mountaineers a 17-0 lead.  It is the second time this year Miller has topped 200 yards in a game, as he also rushed for 202 yards against Coastal Carolina.  Miller also caught one pass for 11 yards and returned a kickoff 14 yards in Saturday's win.

Other Nominees: Aaron Mellette (Elon), Jerick McKinnon (Georgia Southern), Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga), Troy Mitchell (Western Carolina) and Eric Breitenstein (Wofford).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Marcus McMorris, Furman, So., S, Newberry, S.C.
With Furman holding a 14-7 lead over Elon midway through the second quarter, Paladin safety Marcus McMorris thwarted a potential scoring drive for the Phoenix by picking up a Karl Bostick fumble and racing 95 yards for a touchdown to push Furman ahead, 21-7.  McMorris' touchdown was the longest fumble return in school history, topping the previous record of 94 yards set against North Carolina in 1980.  McMorris added two tackles and a sack for minus-12 yards.  The Paladins recorded seven sacks on the day, their most since 2001.

Other Nominees: Jeremy Kimbrough (Appalachian State), John Stevenson (Georgia Southern), Wes Dothard (Chattanooga), Rock Williams (Western Carolina) and Stephon Shelton (Wofford).

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Jacob Huesman, Chattanooga, Fr., QB, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Freshman Jacob Huesman rushed 26 times for a season-high 170 yards and two touchdowns in Chattanooga's 39-31, triple-overtime loss to second-ranked Georgia Southern.  Huesman's 170 yards were the second-most rushing yards in a game by a freshman at UTC.  He also completed 11 of 20 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown.  It was the second time this season Huesman passed for and ran for 100 yards in the same game.  He also caught one pass for 16 yards and accounted for 288 yards of total offense in the loss.

Other Nominees: Sean Price (Appalachian State), James Riley (The Citadel), James Dean (Georgia Southern), Troy Mitchell (Western Carolina), and Will Gay (Wofford).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kasey Redfern, Wofford, Jr., P/PK, Jamestown, N.C.
Kasey Redfern handled all of Wofford's kicking duties in a 24-21 victory over The Citadel.  The junior kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter to give Wofford a 24-7 advantage at the break.  The kick, which proved to be the game-winner, was partially blocked but still sailed through the uprights.  Redfern averaged 42.0 yards on four punts, including a career-best 54 yard boot in the fourth quarter.  The Jamestown, N.C., native kicked off four times and averaged 60.0 yards per kick with three touchbacks.

Other Nominees: Sam Martin (Appalachian State) and Nick Pollard (Chattanooga).
