PHILADELPHIA – The Southern Conference placed four student-athletes on the 2013 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List which was announced Thursday (July 11). The award is given annually to the top defensive player in FCS.
Chattanooga placed a pair on the 20-man watch list as senior linebacker Wes Dothard and junior defensive lineman Davis Tull were chosen. They were joined by Samford’s Jaquiski Tartt (DB) and Wofford’s Alvin Scioneaux (LB).
Tull was named the 2012 Southern Conference Defensive Players of the Year as a sophomore, leading the league with a school-record 12.5 sacks. He also led the league and was fifth in the nation with a UTC-record 19.0 tackles-for-loss.
Dothard is a two-time All-American linebacker and finished 19th in the voting for last year’s Buchanan Award. He led the Mocs with 94 tackles in 2012, repeating as a first team All-Southern Conference selection. He was also a Buchanan Award finalist as a sophomore in 2011, finishing 25th in the national voting.
Tartt led the Bulldogs and tied for seventh in the Southern Conference in tackles with 94 as a junior. He led the SoCon in passes defended with 14, and he tied for the league lead in interceptions with four. From his safety position, Tartt scored two defensive touchdowns for the Bulldogs. He was named All-American and All-SoCon at the conclusion of the 2012 season.
Scioneaux, a senior from Garyville, Louisiana, was third on the team with 70 tackles last season. He led the Terriers and was second in the Southern Conference in tackles for loss with 14.0 for 64 yards. In addition, he led the team in sacks with 7.0 for 48 yards, which was third in the Southern Conference. Scioneaux earned first team All-Southern Conference honors from the coaches and second team honors by the media.
Appalachian State’s Dexter Coakley is the only Southern Conference player to win the award as the Mountaineer earned the Buchanan Award in 1995 and 1996.
The Buchanan Award Watch List can undergo revision during the 2013 season. Ballots will be sent to a panel of about 175 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season. The winner will be invited to The Sports Network FCS Awards Presentation on Dec. 16.
