SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for all games played Aug. 29-31. Georgia Southern’s Dominique Swope and Samford’s Jaquiski Tartt have been named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. Appalachian State’s John Law was selected as the Freshman of the Week, while Samford’s Fabian Truss was tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dominique Swope, Georgia Southern, Jr., RB, Buford, Ga.
Junior running back Dominique Swope carried 17 times for 100 yards and added two touchdowns as Georgia Southern topped Savannah State 77-9 in its season opener. Swope’s two touchdowns gave him his eighth career game with multiple trips to the end zone and it was his 10th career game with at least 100 yards rushing. He averaged 5.9 yards per carry as the Eagles rushed for 576 yards, the eighth-highest single game total in school history.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jaquiski Tartt, Samford, Jr., FS, Mobile, Ala.
With Samford trailing FBS Georgia State 14-7 in the third quarter Friday night, Jaquiski Tartt picked off a pass and raced 33 yards for a touchdown to even the score as the Bulldogs rallied for a 31-21 win. Tartt’s touchdown sparked Samford, as the Bulldogs scored 21 unanswered points in the win. The junior finished the game with five tackles and an additional pass break-up in the win.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: John Law, Appalachian State, Fr., LB, Atlanta, Ga.
Freshman John Law tied for game-high honors with 12 tackles in Appalachian State’s loss at Montana Saturday night. Law recorded three solo stops and nine assists while adding a sack for minus-one yard. Law thwarted Montana’s first drive of the game when he tackled UM’s Jordan Canada for no gain on fourth-and-one at the Appalachian State 19-yard line.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Fabian Truss, Samford, Sr., KR/RB, Birmingham, Ala.
Samford senior Fabian Truss opened the 2013 season in style as he took the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to stake the Bulldogs to a 7-0 lead en route to a 31-21 victory over Georgia State. Truss finished the game with three kickoff returns for 149 yards and added two punt returns for 53 yards, including a 46-yard effort.
