SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s Jordan Timmermann and Morgan Cochran, along with Davidson’s Mikayla Derochie, have been named the SoCon Offensive, Defensive and Freshman Volleyball Players of the Week, respectively, for Sept. 16.

Timmermann, a junior outside hitter, paced the Catamounts offensively with 55 kills on 149 attempts, with a .262 hitting percentage in four matches last week. Timmermann averaged 3.93 kills per set as WCU went 2-2, including 2-1 at the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire UNCW Volleyball Classic over the weekend. She opened the week with 16 kills on 39 attempts and only two errors for a .359 hitting percentage in the Catamounts’ 3-1 loss at Gardner-Webb. In two 3-0 wins against Mercer and North Carolina A&T, she had 11 and 12 kills, respectively. In the team’s final match of the week, a 3-1 loss to UNCW, she tallied 16 kills to lead the team in kills in all four matches during the week. Timmermann has led the Catamounts in kills seven times this season and 27 times in her career. She eclipsed the double-digit kill mark in all four matches this week, as well as nine times this season and 31 times in her career.

Cochran, a senior libero, opened the week with 19 digs in a 3-1 loss at Gardner-Webb on Tuesday. In the first match of WCU’s weekend tournament, Cochran collected 10 digs in a three-set sweep of Mercer before putting together two impressive matches in the same day on Saturday. In the first match against North Carolina A&T, she collected a season-high 31 digs in a three-set win and averaged 10.33 digs per set in the match. She had 12 digs in the first set, six in the second set and 13 in the final set of the match. In the second match of the day, Cochran became the only player in the NCAA this season to turn in 30 digs twice in the same day. She picked up 30 digs in the four-set loss to the tournament host UNCW. She is one of only two players in the country with three 30-dig matches. She entered the weekend ranked fourth in the NCAA in digs per set at 6.10 but raised her average by .26 digs per set. She currently leads the NCAA with a 6.36 digs per set average.

Derochie had a pair of 40-plus assist matches on this weekend. Derochie totaled 46 assists in the team’s 3-1 win over Georgia State, her second-highest single-match total of the season. She also had 44 assists in the team’s 1-3 loss to UCF. Derochie averaged a block per set this weekend and finished with 12 blocks on the weekend. She tied her career high with seven block assists against UCF. Derochie did not commit an attacking error all weekend, finishing with five kills and hitting .294 in the tournament. She hit .500 vs. Buffalo and hit .286 vs. UCF and recorded a service ace in every match this weekend. Derochie made no service errors, attacking errors or receiving errors and recorded just one blocking error in 12 sets. She finished the weekend leading the team in assists and second in blocks and aces.

Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week were: Appalachian State’s Meghan Mahoney, The Citadel’s Lauren Hurt, Davidson’s Anastasia Owens, Furman’s Elle Ross, Georgia Southern’s Crysten Curry, Samford’s Chelsi Carter, Chattanooga’s Melissa Green and Wofford’s Jessica Graham.

Also nominated for Freshman of the Week were: Appalachian State’s Brook Lyons, The Citadel’s Samantha Espy, Davidson’s Mikayla Derochie, Furman’s Annie Bierman, Samford’s Erin Brognar and Chattanooga’s Allie Davenport.
