CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.– Top-seeded Elon blanked No. 9 Chattanooga 4-0 to advance to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tennis Tournament at the Champions Club in Chattanooga,Tenn., on Thursday.
The Phoenix grabbed a win at No. 3 doubles from Stefan Fortmann and Juan Madrid, as they topped Chattanooga’s John Peacey and Gino Delavalle 8-1. Brian Kowalski and Robert Lindgren clinched the doubles point for Elon with an 8-3 decision over Austin Boaz and Derrick Brown at No. 2.
Jordan Kaufman scored Elon’s first singles win of the day, defeating John Peacey in straight sets (6-1, 6-3). Cameron Silverman gave the Phoenix a 3-0 advantage with his win at No. 1, as he dropped Pavels Grigorjevs 6-3, 6-1.
Madrid closed things out for Elon, taking the No. 6 match in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) and pushing the Phoenix into the semifinals with a 4-0 victory.
Elon will play the winner of No. 4 Appalachian State and No. 5 Samford on Friday at 10 a.m.
No. 4 Appalachian State 4, No. 5 Samford 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.– The No. 4 Appalachian State Mountaineers topped No. 5 Samford 4-2 on Thursday to advance to Friday’s semifinals of the Southern Conference Tennis Tournament at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Samford’s duo of Elliot Barnwell and Trey Carter scored the first win of the day, an 8-3 win over Zach Bost and Sebastian King at No. 1 doubles.
Appalachian State’s Steve Lake and Jack Maddocks evened up the doubles score with a win at No.3, topping Liam Sullivan and Henry Moore 8-7. The Bulldogs would steal the doubles point at No. 2 behind an 8-5 win from Austin Akers and Fares Kilani over App State’s Ollie Casey and Daniel Hoang.
Maddocks put the Mountaineers on the board with a win in straight sets at No. 5 singles , winning 6-1, 6-1 over Sullivan. Trey Carter pushed Samford’s advantage to 2-1 at No. 4 with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Appalachian State’s Hoang.
Appalachian State’s Zach Bost made it 2-2 after he defeated Samford’s Akers 7-6,6-3 at No. 3, and teammate Jan-Willem Kleynhans won 7-6, 7-6 at No. 6 against Moore to put the Mountaineers ahead 3-2.
King battled back from a first set loss to Samford’s Barnwell to earn a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win and give the Mountaineers the 4-2 team win.
Appalachian State will play No. 1 seed Elon in the semifinals on Friday at 10 a.m.
No. 3 UNCG 4, No. 6 Georgia Southern 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.– UNCG topped sixth-seeded Georgia Southern 4-0 on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The No. 3 seed Spartans took the doubles point and a 1-0 lead after James Doughtery and Ahmet Sarioglu defeated Kyle Hoffman and Oliver Webb of GSU 8-3 in No. 1 doubles and Randy Phillips and Nahone Wilkins scored an 8-2 win over the Eagles’ Nico DeGroof and Marco Osorio at No. 2.
Hoffman added another UNCG win at No. 3 singles, closing out Phillips 6-3, 6-1 to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage. Daniel Mack swept DeGroof 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 to push UNCG’s lead to 3-0 before Cameron Smith clinched the Spartan victory with a straight set (6-2, 6-2) win over Christian Kerrigan at No. 6.
UNCG advances to Friday’s semifinal round, where the Spartans will play the winner of No. 2 Furman and No. 7 Wofford at 10 a.m.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.– Furman’s Jacob Behal scored a three-set win at No. 6 singles to clinch a 4-3 Paladin win over Wofford in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament.
Behal took the first set 7-6 over Wofford’s Parks Thompson, but Thompson battled back to take set two 6-3. Behal secured the Furman win with a 6-4 win in the final set to push the Paladins into Friday’s semifinals.
Wofford won the doubles point with wins from Haris Poric and Rob Galloway at No. 1 and Jackson Keith and David Sklar at No. 3. Furman’s Behal and Adam Steryous won the match at No. 2 8-5, but Poric and Galloway squeezed out an 8-6 victory over Joel Cook and Matt Browne to give each team a doubles win. Keith and Sklar topped Ben Horst and Alex Christ 8-7 to give Wofford a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
Juan Sheppard put Furman on the board at No. 5, defeating Keith 6-2, 6-1 to knot things up 1-1. Cook nabbed a straight set win (6-2, 6-2) over Trevor Gotkowski at No. 4 and Luke Synn won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Walker Heffron to put Furman up 3-1.
Wofford scored a 6-2, 6-4 Haris Poric win over Browne at No. 2 and a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win from Rob Galloway over Steryous at No. 1 to tie the match at 3-3. Wofford could not complete the comeback, as Behal scored the win at No. 6 to give Furman the 4-3 win.
Furman advances to Friday’s semifinal round, where the Paladins will face No. 3 UNCG at 10 a.m.
