SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland has been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Sept. 26 to Oct. 2 after posting a pair of shutouts for the Bucs. The selection is made by the league office.
Sutherland made eight saves on the week, shutting out No. 25 Furman and Mercer as ETSU opened league play by picking up four points in the standings.
Against the Paladins on Sept. 27, Sutherland made five stops in 110 minutes as the Bucs continued to stymie ranked opponents. In addition to earning a scoreless draw against Furman, ETSU put the collegiate soccer world on notice with a 1-0 win over No. 1 North Carolina on Sept. 13. Both results came via Sutherland shutouts.
The sophomore from Chester, United Kingdom, had three more saves in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Mercer, pushing his career totals to 99 saves and 10 shutouts.
Sutherland, who allowed just two goals in the month of September, has not surrendered a goal in regulation since Aug. 31. He shares the league lead with five shutouts this season and is second in the SoCon in goals against average (0.94) and save percentage (.763).
The weekly SoCon award is Sutherland’s second in three weeks.
ETSU (5-3-1, 1-0-1 SoCon) heads to Spartanburg, South Carolina, for a bout with Wofford (6-3-0, 1-1-0) on Tuesday before visiting league-leading UNCG (6-2-2, 2-0-0) on Saturday.
Also nominated: Will Bagrou (Mercer), Ricky Chavez (UNCG) and Matthew Aurednik (Wofford).
