BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A 15-0 second half run put the game away, as Furman downed Campbell, 79-64 in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The win moves Furman to 23-11 on the year, tying a school single-season win record. The Paladins will play in the CIT semifinals on Wednesday against an opponent to be announced. CBS Sports Network will broadcast the game.
Kris Acox recorded his 10th double-double of the season, notching 24 points on 11-12 shooting and grabbing 10 boards. Devin Sibley recorded his 14th 20-point game of the season and John Davis III scored 10 points and added four assists. The Paladins shot 51.9 percent from the floor, while holding Campbell to 46.6% shooting.
Sparked by Acox’s 16 first-half points, Furman opened up a 39-30 halftime lead. A four-point play by Daniel Fowler gave Furman a 13-point advantage at 27-14 with 8:27 to go. Later in the half, a three by Jordan Lyons opened the Paladins’ largest lead of the half at 37-22, before the Campbell ended the half on an 8-2 run to cut Furman’s lead to 39-30.
After Furman pushed the lead to 16 on free throws by Davis, Campbell cut Furman’s lead to five at 58-53 with 7:34 to go. The Paladins responded with a 15-0 run to take a 20-point advantage with 2:47 remaining, effectively putting the game out of reach. The Camels cut the lead to 13 with under a minute to go, but Furman used two free throws by Jon Jean to give Furman the 79-64 win.
Campbell was led by Chris Clemons with 29 points, while Cory Gensler added 15.
