WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Just two days removed from competition, the VMI lacrosse team took the long journey to northern New Jersey for a makeup game with Monmouth and was defeated by a 15-8 score Monday afternoon in West Long Branch.
VMI (2-9, 0-4 SoCon) freshman and assists leader John Daniel recorded his first career hat trick by scoring three goals throughout the game, but the Keydets struggled to keep pace with the Hawks as Monmouth raced out to a 6-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Daniel scored VMI's first goal early in the second period, but the Hawks notched four more before the half to yield an insurmountable 10-1 advantage at the break.
Keydet junior Wesley Sanders had his streak of 24 consecutive games with at least one point snapped as the Hawk defense held the league leader in shot attempts to just two shots on the afternoon. Appearing at No. 22 on the national listing for consecutive points, the Austin, Texas native had logged at least one point in every game dating back to the third game of 2016, a streak that consisted of 43 goals and 15 assists for 58 combined points.
Senior Chris Spada scored two goals for the Keydets while fellow seniors Nick Dodd and Dale Mattice and sophomore Joseph Flynn each recorded one. Goalies Joe Riccadonna and freshman Benjamin Stump shared an equal 30 minutes in the circle as Riccadonna earned eight saves in the loss.
The Hawks, receiving Top 25 votes in this week's Maverik media poll, were paced by two goals apiece from Dan Bloodgood, Tyler Keen and Bryce Wasserman while nine others recorded solo scores.
VMI returns to action this Saturday at home where the Keydets will face league opponent Air Force at noon at Drill Field No. 2.
