SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford infielder Whitney Hinton and Furman ace Lindsey Bert have been named the Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games held April 10-16, the league announced Monday. Selections are made by the Southern Conference office.
Hinton hit .562 and slugged .813 as Samford went 3-2 last week against Tennessee Tech and UNCG. The freshman posted four multiple hit games and recorded four doubles and RBIs. She also added four runs scored and did not strike out in the Bulldogs’ five contests last week.
In the Samford’s 5-1 game one win of its doubleheader at Tennessee Tech on Wednesday, Hinton went 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored. Hinton’s peak performance of the week came in game two in Cookeville, Tennessee, as Hinton went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs in the Bulldogs’ five-inning 9-1 win. In game one of Samford’s series at UNCG on Saturday, the Theodore, Alabama, native went 2-for-2 at the plate, posting her third straight game with a double, this one to left field. On Sunday, Hinton guided the Bulldogs to their seventh SoCon win of the season after going 3-for-4, while adding one run scored, and was hit by a pitch in Bulldogs’ 5-2 win over the Spartans.
Samford (19-27, 7-5 SoCon) will play cross-town rival UAB on Tuesday, April 18, with the first pitched scheduled for 7 p.m. (ET).
Bert garners her fifth SoCon Pitcher of the Week award– sixth of her career – after posting a 3-1 week in four appearances and 26 innings pitched against Winthrop and Mercer last week. Bert also recorded 36 strikeouts in her four appearances last week, including a career-high 12 strikeouts in Furman’s 1-0 win over Mercer on Friday.
In the Paladins’ 6-0 game one win at Winthrop on Tuesday, Bert pitched a three-hit complete game shutout in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Tuesday. Bert recorded her second straight complete game shutout – her seventh shutout of the season – on Friday in the Paladins’ 1-0 win over Mercer. Her career-best 12 strikeouts was just one shy of tying the SoCon single-game high this season. The Tallahassee, Florida, native tossed five innings of relief in game two of Furman-Mercer series, which was postponed from Friday afternoon to 10 a.m. (ET) on Saturday morning. Bert stepped in the circle in the sixth inning with the Paladins winning, 2-1, in what would become a 10-inning game. In game three on Saturday, Bert posted another complete game, despite having already pitched five innings in the game one. The junior surrendered just three hits and one earned run, while fanning 10 Mercer batters, as the Paladins fell, 1-0.
Furman (23-17, 7-2 SoCon) returns to action on Wednesday, April 19, when they host the South Carolina State Bulldogs in a 3 p.m. (ET) doubleheader at Pepsi Stadium, which will broadcast on YouTube.
Other nominees for player of the week: Mykeah Johnson (ETSU), Taylor Miller (Mercer), Marisa Sholtes (UNCG) and Courtney Price (Western Carolina).
