SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Emmanuel Tait and Western Carolina’s Scott Peretin have been named the Southern Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, while Samford’s Tonia McKinley and Selena Popp swept honors for the Bulldogs on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday. Selections are made by a group of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held April 12-18.
Tait, a true freshman, won the 100-meter dash at the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile, Alabama, on Saturday with a time 10.50 seconds. His time of 10.50 seconds currently ranks second in the SoCon this outdoor season. Tait also took third place in the 100-meter hurdles at the South Alabama Invitational, posting a SoCon-leading time of 14.24 seconds.
Peretin won the shot put at Western Carolina’s Beynon Sports Catamount Classic with a best-mark of 51’-0.75” (15.56m). Peretin’s throw of 51’-0.75” (15.56m) is a career personal best and ranks first in the SoCon. Peretin, a junior for the Catamounts, was also the top collegiate finisher in the hammer throw with a best-distance of 175’-2” (53.39m), placing second overall. The Chapel Hill, North Carolina, native set the SoCon top mark (186’-8”, 56.90m) in the men’s hammer throw at High Point’s VertKlasse Meeting on March 31. Additionally, Peretin took third place at the Beynon Sports Catamount Classic in the discus throw with a best-throw of 154’-4” (47.01m), which is good for fourth on the SoCon outdoor performance list.
McKinley tied the SoCon’s leading time of 11.87 seconds in the women’s 100-meter dash with a fifth-place finish at the South Alabama Invitational on Saturday. The junior also placed eighth overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.55 seconds. McKinley’s time of 24.55 seconds in the 200-meter dash ranks third among SoCon outdoor competitors this season.
Popp, a native of Hixon, Tennessee, scored 4,985 points in the women’s heptathlon at the South Alabama Invitational on Saturday. Popp, who set the women’s indoor pentathlon meet record at the 2017 SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championship, leads all SoCon heptathlon competitors by nearly 500 points. Her score of 4,928 currently ranks 20th on the East Regional list.
Also nominated for women’s track athlete of the week: Kyra Atkins (ETSU, 100m, 200m and 4x100m), Taylor Delaney (UNCG, 800m) and Dasha Arnaut (Western Carolina, 400m, 100mH, 4x400m and 4x100m).
Also nominated for women’s track athlete of the week: Jessy Page (The Citadel, discus and hammer throw) and Meghan Breden (Western Carolina, pole vault).
