SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Tanner Hinkle and Allie Buchalski have been named Southern Conference men’s and women’s runners of the week, respectively, for competition that took place Sept. 8-10, the league office announced Wednesday. This is the second consecutive week a pair of Paladins have swept the awards and second honor of the season for Buchalski. Both the men’s and women’s teams swept the titles at the Furman Cross Country Classic in Greenville, South Carolina.
Hinkle, a senior from Mason, Michigan, paced the Furman’s men’s team with a time of 25:39.00 as he claimed third place. Furman runners took five of the top seven spots and eight of the top 11 positions in the 8k race, totaling 15 points to earn the win over 14 other schools, including ACC foe Clemson.
Buchalski, a senior, won the individual title in the women’s 6k race with a time of 20:30.42. The Johns Creek, Georgia, native led the Paladin women’s squad to a first-place team finish as the women tallied 18 points in the victory. Buchalski bested the second-place finisher by 12 seconds as the Furman women took five of the top six spots. This is the sixth weekly SoCon honor of her career.
The Paladins will have a couple of weeks off before competing in the Louisville Invitational on Sept. 30 in Louisville, Kentucky, the site of the 2017 NCAA Championships.
