SPARTANBURG, S.C. – 43 student-athletes from the Southern Conference were named NFCA All-American Scholar-Athletes on Tuesday, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Western Carolina boasted 11 student-athletes on the list, the most among conference schools. A record 7,365 softball players across seven membership divisions earned the honor for the 2016-17 academic year.
NCAA Division I led the way with 1,843 student-athletes earning a 3.5 grade-point average or higher, while 1,825 in Division III garnered recognition followed by 1,267 Division II student-athletes. High School weighted and High School unweighted posted 751 and 624 honorees apiece. NAIA amassed 559 recipients and Junior College totaled 496.
ETSU placed eight on the list including Brooke Baxter, Malloree Schurr, Rebecca Wahrmund, Kelsey Chernak, Kylie Toler, Tiffany Laughren, Emma Martindale and Renae Spears.
Furman had nine make the list including Casey Bigham, Lauren Duggar, Brittany Houston, Courtney Jacobs, Carolina Nageotte, Elizabeth Pederson, Cammy Pereira, Hannah Reynolds and Elise Smith.
Mercer had eight earn the honor including Jastine Alaan, Emma Andrew, Taylor Miller, Anna Oneill, Stella Preston, Maxine Rodriquez, Meghan Rud and Caroline Taylor.
UNCG placed seven on the list including Kylie Bouplon, Jordan Gontram, Sidney Grkman, Hagan Kiser, Jasmine Palmer, Kayleigh Willis and Mackenzie Winslow.
Western Carolina had 11 make the list including Madison Armstrong, Courtney Buchanan, Emily Castro, Abigail Daniels, Kassandra Flores, Erica Hayes, Anna Hughey, Ashlyn Long, Cheyenne Mathews, Courtney Price, Shaina Reed, Kara Salvo, Emily Weatherman and Taylor Wooten.
