SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Kahlia Lawrence has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week for games played Dec. 19 to Jan. 1, the conference announced Tuesday. Lawrence and the Bears are in the midst of a 10-game winning streak including a 97-86 win over North Carolina, the first win over an ACC opponent in program history.

Lawrence averaged 22.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per game for the Bears over the last two weeks and notched two double-doubles, giving her three for the season. The senior recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds in a win over South Carolina State on Dec. 19 and then chipped in eight points and five rebounds in a win over Howard on Dec. 21.

Lawrence’s best performance of the two-week span came at ACC opponent North Carolina on Dec. 28 as the 5-8 guard poured in 39 points and brought down 13 rebounds to help the Bears secure the victory. Lawrence shot 66 percent from beyond the arc and 90 percent from the charity stripe in the contest and handed out two assists in 39 minutes of action. Lawrence’s 39 points and six 3-pointers are both career highs.

The Columbus, Georgia, native rounded out 2017 with 27 points and seven rebounds in a win at Charlotte. Lawrence finished 11-of-16 from the field, made four 3-pointers and handed out six assists in the game.
