SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s KeKe Calloway has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week for games played Jan. 2-8, the conference announced Tuesday. Calloway and the Bears are in the midst of a 12-game winning streak after picking up two SoCon wins over the weekend.
In Mercer’s two games last week, Calloway averaged a blistering 37.0 points per game as the junior sank 19 3-pointers in the contests. Calloway started the week with 34 points in a win at Wofford on Jan. 4, chipping in five steals and two rebounds. The junior finished 65 percent from the floor in the contest, including 70 percent from 3-point range.
On Saturday at Furman, Calloway exploded for a career-high 40 points after burying 12 3-pointers, tying the NCAA record. The 12 3-pointers also shattered the SoCon record of nine that was set in 2008 and her 40 points is the highest single-game total in the conference this season and tied for eighth in the nation. The Forsyth, Georgia, native finished the contest 66 percent from long range while chipping in six rebounds and two assists.
For the week, Calloway finished with 74 points, eight rebounds, six steals and four assists while shooting 67 percent from deep.
The Bears (15-2, 2-0 SoCon) boast the top two scorers in the league, with Kahlia Lawrence averaging 19.2 points and Calloway averaging 18.9 points per game. A 5-9 guard, Calloway leads the league in 3-point field-goal percentage (41 percent) and 3-point field goals made (67).
