SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel forward Zane Najdawi has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Jan. 30-Feb. 5. The award is selected by the league office.
Najdawi averaged 22 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, helping The Citadel defeat Wofford and Furman last week.
Najdawi began the week with 16 points and seven rebounds as the Bulldogs topped the Terriers 80-78 on Thursday. Against the Terriers, Najdawi became the 33rd player to score 1,000 points at The Citadel and just the 10th to do so in three years or less. He added added four blocks in the and became just the second player in program history to total 1,000 points, 400 rebounds and 100 blocks.
The junior from Midlothian, Virginia, capped off the week with a double-double against Furman on Saturday. Najdawi led the Bulldogs with 28 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked three shots in a 100-92 overtime victory. Najdawi began the game 5-for-5 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers as The Citadel snapped a 4-game losing streak to the Paladins.
For the week, Najdawi shot 53.8 percent from the floor (14-for-26) and 60 percent from the 3-point line (6-for-10).
The Citadel (9-14, 4-7 SoCon) travels to Chattanooga on Thursday, tipping off with the Mocs (8-17, 2-10 SoCon) at 7 p.m.
