SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Sam Philp has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Jan. 13 through Feb. 5, the conference announced Tuesday. Philp went 3-1 at No. 1 singles and was 2-1 at No. 1 doubles with Olivier Stuart. As a team, the Bears are 4-1 this season and on a four-match win streak.
The senior started the season 3-0 after picking up singles wins over Louisiana’s Elio Lago (6-3, 6-4), Florida Atlantic’s Remi Chancerel (7-6, 6-3) and Georgia Southern’s Stefano Di Aloy (4-6, 6-3, 1-10). Philp’s lone setback came at the hands of Alabama State’s Ion Efrim (3-6, 6-3, 1-10). The Versailles, France, native is Mercer’s first nationally ranked player at No. 121 in the ITA rankings.
In doubles competition, Mercer’s top pair started 2-0 with wins over Louisiana and Georgia Southern before falling 4-6 to Alabama State’s Efrim and Alexis Collard.
The Bears are back in action today when they host in-state foe Kennesaw State.
