SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Marisa Sholtes and Furman’s Emily Demonte have been named Southern Conference softball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for games played Feb. 8-Feb. 11, the conference office announced Monday. This is the first weekly award for both Sholtes and Demonte.
Sholtes started the 2018 season with a 6-for-9 effort at the plate, including three home runs, as UNCG finished play in the Kickin’ Chicken Classic in Conway, South Carolina, with a 3-1 record. Sholtes got things started on Friday with two hits, three runs and five RBIs in UNCG’s run-rule victory over Presbyterian. Both of Sholtes’ hits in the game were home runs. On Feb. 10 in a 2-1 loss to host Coastal Carolina, Sholtes finished 1-for-1 with an RBI as the Albany, New York, native belted a solo home run in her first at-bat before drawing walks in her next two plate appearances. Against Saint Francis (Pa.), Sholtes finished 2-for-3 from the plate and scored two runs as the Spartans earned a 9-8 win. Sholtes rounded out the weekend with a single against Iowa State on Feb. 11 as UNCG earned its first win against the Cyclones in program history. The redshirt junior finished the opening weekend with a .667 batting average, .786 on base percentage and 1.667 slugging percentage while also recording 25 putouts.
Demonte started the 2018 campaign with a 2-0 record after picking up wins over Marshall and Wichita State at the Plainsmen Invitational in Auburn, Alabama, this past weekend. Demonte earned the start in Friday’s opener against Marshall and limited the Herd to just an unearned run on five hits over five innings while fanning five batters. The righty walked just one batter en route to earning the 3-1 victory. On Feb. 10, the junior came out of the bullpen with Furman trailing and held Wichita State to one earned run on six hits over 5 2/3 innings to become the eventual winner after AnnaRose Borrelli delivered a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Furman the 8-7 victory. For the week, Demonte allowed just one earned run (0.66 ERA), fanned seven in 10 2/3 innings of work and scattered 11 hits.
