SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Elsa Pool has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Feb. 6-12, the conference announced Tuesday. Pool is the second Samford student-athlete to win the weekly award this year, joining her doubles partner, Holly Horsfall.
Pool won both singles matches at the No. 4 spot last week. On Feb. 7, the sophomore earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over UAB’s Dominika Hrabalova, giving Samford its lone win in a 4-1 loss. The Kingscote, England, native followed that up with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Linda Burrows of Middle Tennessee, improving her record to 4-1 this season.
In doubles action, the No. 2 doubles pair posted an 0-2 record for the week after falling 3-6 in both contests. The duo is 3-3 this season.
Samford is back in action on Feb. 16 with a 4 p.m. match against Georgia State before traveling to Auburn on Feb. 17.
Also nominated: Alory Pereira (ETSU), Katarina Kozarov (Furman), Brianna Gomez (UNCG) and Jordan Strickland (Western Carolina).
