SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG forward James Dickey has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Feb. 6-12 after helping the Spartans to three league wins. The award is selected by the league office.
Dickey nearly averaged a double-double and set a school record during the week as the Spartans earned wins over Furman, Western Carolina and ETSU, all three of which were in the top four in the league standings at the time.
The sophomore from Raleigh, North Carolina, opened his week with 11 points and 12 rebounds in an 80-67 road win over Furman, which was tied for third in the SoCon standings and ranked 24th in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, on Feb. 7. Dickey was 5-for-7 (71.4 percent) from the floor that day.
Dickey followed that up with 11 points and nine rebounds against Western Carolina on Saturday, just missing another double-double in the Spartans’ 65-48 win. The Catamounts entered the contest tied for fourth in the SoCon standings.
Dickey closed his week with an all-around solid performance in Monday night’s 74-56 win over ETSU, which entered the game ranked fifth in the mid-major poll, undefeated in league play and riding a 16-game winning streak that was the longest active streak in NCAA Division I. Dickey scored eight points, pulled down seven rebounds and collected a school-record eight blocked shots to help stymie the streaking Bucs. Dickey also helped the Spartans set a team record with 14 total blocked shots.
