SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference office has announced the seeding for the 2018 SoCon Women’s Basketball Championship presented by General Shale, which will begin Thursday, March 1, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
After completing a perfect 14-0 conference slate and claiming its first-ever outright SoCon regular-season title, Mercer (27-2, 14-0) earned the top seed. The Bears, who boast two of the top three scorers in the league, will open up the tournament as they square off with No. 8 seed Western Carolina (5-23, 1-12 SoCon) on Thursday at 11 a.m. Mercer currently owns the third-longest winning streak in the nation at 24 games and has not lost since Nov. 24.
Furman (17-12, 7-7) and Samford (14-15, 6-8 SoCon) are slotted at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, and will face off in Thursday’s second game at approximately 1:15 p.m. The two programs split the regular-season meetings with each taking the contest on their home courts. UNCG, whose game against Western Carolina is still in progress at time of this release, could match Samford at 6-8 in the league with a win, but the Bulldogs would claim the No. 5 seed by virtue of their season sweep of the Spartans.
ETSU (18-11, 11-3 SoCon) is the No. 2 seed for just the second time in program history after compiling its best conference record since rejoining the league in 2014. The Bucs, who were the No. 2 seed in 2014, will battle No. 7 Wofford (10-19, 3-11 SoCon) in game three of the first round at approximately 3:30 p.m. ETSU is led by Brittney Ezell, who picked up her 200th career win on Feb. 22.
No. 3 seed Chattanooga (17-11, 8-6 SoCon) and No. 6 seed UNCG (11-17, 5-8 SoCon) are set to square off in the final first-round game at approximately 5:45 p.m. Chattanooga, winner of the past five SoCon Championships, swept both regular-season meetings between the two.
Semifinal action will take place on Friday and the women’s championship game will tip off on Sunday at 12 p.m.
All women’s basketball games will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center and are set to be broadcast on ESPN3. For more information, visit SoConSports.com.
