SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga junior Lake Johnson has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Feb. 28 to March 6. The selection is made by the league office.
Johnson tied for 11th in the 93-golfer field at the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Auburn in Opelika, Florida, at Grand National Golf Course. The Chattanooga, Tennessee, native finished at 3-under-par 213, opening with an even-par 72 and following with a 3-under 69. He closed with another 72 to post his third career effort of par or better over 54 holes. Johnson finished one stroke back of 39th-ranked Jovan Rebula of Auburn and was tied with No. 30 Brandon Mancheno, also of Auburn. Johnson finished nine strokes ahead of ninth-ranked Hayden Buckley of Missouri.
Johnson helped Chattanooga overcome a tough opening round to finish 10th in the 17-team field, which included No. 9 Auburn and No. 31 Missouri. The Mocs shot 302 Sunday to sit 14th after the first round but recovered with a 289 Monday and a 288 Tuesday, moving up two spots each day.
Also nominated: Keller Harper (Furman), Nick Lyerly (UNCG) and Walker Simas (Wofford).
