BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team fell at home to 21st-ranked Mississippi State, 11-1 in five innings Tuesday evening at the Samford Softball Field.
Mekhi Mayfield led Samford at the plate with a home run in a 1-for-2 performance. Whitney Hinton, Shelby Maze and Kelsey Royalty added one hit each for Samford.
Taylor DeCelles (3-8) took the loss in the circle for Samford. She pitched 2.0 innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits. Annalyn Yantis pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
For Mississippi State, Mia Davidson went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Carmen Carter and Morgan Bell had two hits and two RBI each. Bevia Robinson also drove in two runs, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Candace Denis (3-0) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits to pick up the win in the circle for MSU.
Mississippi State plated three runs in the first inning and one in the second to take an early 4-0 lead. MSU broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the third inning to make the score 11-0.
Samford’s lone run of the contest came in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out in the inning, Mayfield homered to left-center field, her second home run of the season, to make the score 11-1.
With the loss, Samford falls to 5-21 on the season. Mississippi State improves to 22-3 with the win.
Samford will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Belmont/TSU Invitational. Samford will take on Belmont Friday at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, the Bulldogs will play Tennessee State at 10 a.m. and Rhode Island at 2:30 p.m. Samford will wrap up the tournament by taking on St. Bonaventure Sunday at 10 a.m.
