SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG's Brianna Gomez has been named the Southern Conference women's tennis player of the week for all matches played April 10-16, the conference announced Tuesday. The Spartans earned their first conference win of the season on April 14 with a 4-3 win over Chattanooga. This is the first weekly award of Gomez's career.
The Miami, Florida, native started the week with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Curran Carver of Wofford at the No. 4 singles spot as the Spartans narrowly fell 4-3 on April 10. Gomez then earned a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) win over Chattanooga's Tamri Chalaganidze to help UNCG clinch the 4-3 win over the Mocs. Gomez's midweek match against nonconference foe Davidson at the No. 3 spot was unfinished. The freshman finished the regular season with a 15-3 record at the No. 4-6 spots.
UNCG heads into the SoCon Tennis Championship as the No. 8 seed and will face No. 1 Furman at 1 p.m. on April 20.
