CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The VMI lacrosse team completed its 2018 season with a 17-8 loss to No. 10 Virginia on a warm Tuesday evening at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Despite the loss, senior Wesley Sanders entered another elite group in VMI lacrosse history by scoring his 70th career goal, a feat that only 12 former Keydets have accomplished since the program’s NCAA inception in 1983. He scored the goal with only 4:11 left in regulation.

Last Saturday against Jacksonville, he joined the 100-point club in program annals by recording two assists in the loss, giving him 69 VMI career goals and 32 assists. His goal in Tuesday night’s loss allowed the Austin, Texas, native to add his name to another elite group in program history.

The Keydets (2-11) fell behind early as the ranked Cavaliers (12-5) the first five goals of the game. VMI attack Ryan Perouty, one of only three freshmen in Division I lacrosse to have scored in every game this season, continued the streak with VMI’s first goal of the game at the 5:08 mark of the first quarter.

VMI would tack on another goal by John Daniel in the final minute before the half, but the damage had been done as the Hoos went into the break with a dominant 12-2 advantage.

Junior defender Kyle Walsh scored his first goal of the season early in the fourth period while Daniel, John O’Donnell, Donald Proper, Sanders and Perouty also registered goals in the second half.

Perouty and Daniel led the Keydets with two goals apiece, while UVA was paced by four goals from Mike D’Amario and three by Ian Laviano. VMI goalie Bill Osteen played 23 minutes and logged five saves before he was replaced by Joe Riccadonna, who finished with four saves.
