INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee has announced the participants for the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships preliminary competitions. Six Southern Conference schools will send 40 representatives to the East Preliminary in Tampa, Florida, for competition May 24-26.

SoCon schools saw 14 female student-athletes earn 15 spots, with Wofford’s Hannah Steelman competing in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run. Twenty-three male student-athletes earned 26 spots, with ETSU’s Ben Johnson competing in the hammer and javelin; Western Carolina’s Dakota Lamont competing in the 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay; and the Catamounts’ Mateius Brown competing in the shot put and discus.

Furman’s Allie Buchalski is the highest-seeded SoCon student-athlete, as she has the second-best qualifying time in the field for the 5,000-meter run at 15:39.17.

The University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida, will host the East Preliminary and California State University, Sacramento in Sacramento, California, will host the West Preliminary. The qualifiers out of these two regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon.
