CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Mercer shortstop RJ Yeager and Samford starting pitcher Samuel Strickland earned Perfect Game/Rawlings All-American Freshman Second Team honors on Thursday.
Hailing from Lynn Haven, Florida, Yeager batted .347 with six home runs and 42 RBIs in his rookie campaign. The infielder slugged .458 with an on-base percentage of .410, totaling 73 hits and scoring 53 runs en route to All-SoCon second team honors from both the coaches and media. Yeager was also named the coaches' freshman of the year.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Strickland went 8-2 with a 2.33 era while holding opposing hitters to a .177 batting average. The left-hander struck out 87 batters over 81 innings pitched, walking just 15 and was named to both the coaches' and media's All-SoCon first team squads. For his efforts, Strickland was named the media's freshman of the year.
