RALEIGH, N.C. — Randall Diabe and Cary Miller picked up impressive victories to end Appalachian State's dual meet at No. 7 NC State, which posted a 29-9 home win in Reynolds Coliseum on Tuesday.
Diabe earned a 3-2 decision against 18th-ranked Malik McDonald, who has reached the NCAA Championships in his career and had a 7-1 record entering the night. Diabe used a second-period takedown to pull ahead 3-0, and he held on after a pair of escapes to claim his third dual win this season when the Mountaineers (2-4) were facing a top-15 team.
Miller recorded his sixth pin of the season halfway through the third period against Deonte Wilson, who took a 9-2 record into the match. It was the second pin in five days for Miller, who had one in the second period Friday against Ohio.
The other closest matches involving the Mountaineers occurred at 133 pounds, where fourth-ranked Tariq Wilson of NC State (5-0) pulled out a 5-2 decision against 23rd-ranked Codi Russell, at 149 pounds, where fourth-ranked Justin Oliver won a 6-3 decision against Matt Zovistoski in his 2018-19 dual meet debut and at 174 pounds, where Thomas Flitz had a late takedown in his 7-5 loss against Daniel Bullard, who has spent most of the season in the top 20 of his weight class.
In all, NC State had six top-20 wrestlers, including four with top-five rankings, compete Tuesday.
